This was certainly an eye-opener and an action-packed trip for a young six year old who'd never left Mississippi before. Your story is full of colourful, descriptive detail seen through a child's lens such as the mosquitoes and all the wonders of being at the seaside. Such a large family too but clearly all the fun was spending time with Dave.
Some small edits below:
I was shocked to see the houses (were) close together
No one seem(ed) to notice I was even there
We don't(') want to play with her...
After (living) in rural Mississippi...

Thank you for sharing another excellent chapter which vividly depicts a contrasting world for little Beth. Take care Debbie

Very interesting. Nice, colorful images of the lives of younguns in the 40s.
I read recently that modern parents can't raise their kids the way we raised ours because that world doesn't exist anymore. I think that's right, but they could come a lot closer than they are. (smiley face here)

Thank you Wayne. Children of today see know a lot about things we didn't know about and know very little about how to entertain themselves with the kind of things we enjoyed. It is a different world.

One thing I've noticed that your contact with family is amazing, we've lost contact completely with family, there was a falling out with one of mum's sisters, somewhere along the line they became snobs, so, there was a parting, I suppose that's what becomes of immigrant families, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy, In my mother's dad's family there was a falling out an the family name was Lay but one of the brothers got so upset he has his family name changed from Lay to Leigh.

    That sounds a little drastic

The strength of this work is in its ability to place the reader in a very specific time and place. Because the locations and the family ties are described so skillfully there is a tangible lived-in feel as I read this work. Although I've never been to Texas, this story brought me back to chasing ice cream trucks in my own neighborhood on muggy summer afternoons.

Thank you for sharing.

Congratulations on your 1000 milestone post. That's very impressive. I enjoyed reading this one. The Texas towns you mentioned I have visited often.

Aunt Alene greeted me. "Well, hello there Baby. (me,)

Aunt Merle spoke up. "Well hello kids. (up,)

"What do Ya'll want to play?" she asked crossly. How about 'hide and seek?" (ya'll & "How)

"Not It." "Not it." Dave and I both yelled. (Two dialogues in the same paragraph. The first on you can probably tack onto the previous sentence.)

Breathing in the poison couldn't have been good for our lungs, but It must not have bee (it & I remember them spraying for mosquitoes where I grew up.)

Another good story Beth. Seems like you and Dave had a good time and its a memory you both will remember. Congratulations on your 1000th milestone. I'm not quite that far but approaching.
Smiles, Carol

I'm surprised that I've put so many things on FanStory over the years. They aren't all backed so I hope I don't lose them. I appreciate your reviews.
