This rather straight forward narration did not have the impact that I like my poems to have--- rhyming, the flow, etc. While I appreciated the content, I found it hard It read it as a poem. Thanks for sharing.

It was in fact entered into the wrong category. Completely my fault. I intended it to be entered as a story.

Solid work, with a great message. A little too straightforward in how its told for my liking, that's just personal preference. I enjoy poetry that leads to interpretation and some ambiguity. However, overall a good read and I'll make a point of reading more on Nomi338's writing.

Thank you. This actually wound up on the wrong side of the page. It was not intended to be entered as poetry but as a short story. I appreciate your fine comments and welcome you to investigate my entire portfolio.

That makes more sense. This reads better as a story to say the least. I thought that may have been the case, but couldn't be sure.

Hi, nomi338

Yeah. People (mostly white people) think racism is gone. Let's examine

There is.systemic racism on virtually every side of life

Black youth has trouble getting any summer job or any job at all. Those jobs all go to white kids.

The unemployment rate for African-Americans is almost twice that for white Americans. No other group lags as much as that.

There is still personal racism where there's a one on one and the black person is attacked or killed or just ridiculed, are made fun of and provoked

There is still discrimination in housing. Because there is almost no way to enforce the law against discrimination

Job resumes with names like Leticia, Latonia and Dashawn are tossed in the trash bin by white racist employers because they know those names belong to Black people

When it's time for a promotion, it's not the black person who gets the promotion. Guess who?

Black entrepreneurs have trouble getting the same loans that white entrepreneurs get. Neither one has capital and need a loan to start or stay in business.

Young African-Americans die at a much faster rate than any other group. Whites will argue it's because of black on black crime. That may be true, but there are reasons why there's black on black crime.

When you take away hope and there are no good jobs around, people will work a job they can do and get well paid for. Unfortunately, that is in the drug industry or other illegal activities.

Education is the key. But, we still don't have equal elementary schools, middle schools or high schools and they'res still a lot of segregation among the schools. So, you can say it's a black school 90% of the students are black. Those black schools are not able to provide education that is equal. Why? Black students get hand me downs from the whites. One example is a high school student who got a used book from a white high school. He then used the book in his high school. it's true that a lot of the reason for black schools to be unequal I still do with gangs and kids who won't mind at all. Kids not getting the nutrition they need, kids having to walk through Warzone to get to school. Kids who haven't had enough to eat, kids who were on drugs, who were born on drugs.

The common misconception is that Black people were meant to be athletes, musicians, and drug dealers

But, in Hollywood there is still a lot of bigotry. How many leading actresses are African-American? And, how many leading actors are African-American? There is a big discrepancy, African Americans make up around 25% of our population here in the states

The Grammys is probably the most inclusive of all award shows

So many African-American kids have lost their parents to jail, to drugs. Sometimes both parents. Why? Because and identical situation the white person gets rehab and the black person goes to jail. Statistics prove that.

I enjoyed your poem

Good job. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for your review. I must say you paint a pretty grim picture of life here in the US. I am a Christian and I do believe in the scriptures that promise a better and brighter day for all who believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.

It's scary how much we can transfer our prejudice es to our children. This story is a great example of that. An interesting story that held my attention from the start, thanks for sharing.

Thank you, most of the early part of the story actually happened to me.

A poignant story here and this guy mess with the wrong man, and got his comeuppance. I have never understood anyone who has prejudice for the sake of it. We can show prejudice towards someone who has treated us badly in the past and we are wary of them after that, but showing prejudice against someone because of other people's views sounds flimsy and menacing. I enjoyed your story as the tables were turned here and prejudice did not win, love Dolly x x x

Unfortunately, your story has taken place thousands of times through the years. White people feel superior to Black people. Thin teen aged girls feel superior to heavier girls. Blond hair is superior to brown hair. Blue eyes are superior. Tall is better than short. Young is better than old. My point is, many people always look for a way to feel they are better in some way than other people. Most times, it is small minded people who feel THEY are inferior in some way. To prevent it from being obvious, they find fault in others. Actually, it crosses all races.

Your story reminds us that we are ALL created equal. But sometimes, some people are more prepared to ward off bullies. Great story.

Much of the earl part of this actually happened to me. This Mexican kid decided to try his best to provoke me, but I was not about to risk the best job I ever had. The bus driver seeing how I put up with the harassments decided on Friday to pass this kid and his friends up. Never stopping to pick them up.

Anyone who thinks they are superior to someone else need only try and compare themselves with Jesus Christ. How many of us would lay down our life for the sake of someone who has expressed hatred of us and our beliefs.

Nomi,
I identify with your poem in a different way. Bullies come in all colors--and all sexes.
I've been bullied before because of my depression. I have a relentless foe named Stigma.
I, like your protagonist, took the slights, the smirks, the innuendos day after day on the job or social events. And I did not much of anything. I felt powerless.
But sometimes silence is better, not to be confused with pacifism.
Your story is real, and I hope it reaches many.
God luck with all your writing.
Cindy

Thank you Cindy. Before reacting, I weighed the possible ramifications and decided that it was not worth it. Many people noticed and my abuser got his in the end. Not the way it happened in the story but it was just as sweet

A sad commentary on life today. The prejudice that people have over skin color baffles me. So sorry that any part of this story is your story nomi. I may have told you before that my son-in-law is a wonderful black man and yet he has stories to tell that are heartbreaking.
Your story is well written and sadly, it is still happening today.

Blessings
Janet

Thank you Janet. The first part of the story did happen to me. My abuser was dealt a blow of punishment, not like in the story but sweet nevertheless. Tiring of his stupid behavior, the bus driver decided not to stop and pick him and his friends up on Friday. After that I was not bothered again.

Racist Daniel Orozco looked up to his uncle Sam and Eric were racist too. I think innocent children learn prejudice from their family.

Raul was mad with African Americans out of jealousy.

Ernest Brown was excited to start his dream job as any body would be.

The bigit Daniel stepped on Ernest foot. Unfortunately for Daniel he fooled around with the wrong man. 'Killer Mike,' was a former gang member adept at using his cane and beat up stupid Daniel... thank goodness for small favors.

I like the ending. LoL what a surprise for Daniel.

Great story but I had a hard time following. I had to read it several times

Part of this is factual. The person who represented Daniel got his punishment by the bus driver, tiring of his foolishness eventually refused to pick him and his friends up. Their reactions caused him to reign in his abuse.
