A beautiful story, and I am so glad that forgiveness was offered and received before his death. Only then can it be a "good" death. Thank you for sharing this timely piece.

"Randy Johnson" Hey, that's the name of a famous American baseball pitcher.
".Ã? When asked if everything was okay" Edit the typo at the beginning of this sentence.
"disowned her nine years ago because she marriedÃ? a man of another race." More typos here--and elsewhere. Read through thoroughly and revise. Also, that attitude is very bigotted of Mr. Johnson.
My goodness, dead at only 58?? Geez!
Interesting tale of forgiveness and eunion.

Yes, death can be powerful. A good death can be the beginning of a new day for others who have been close to the one who has passed away. This was excellently written with plenty of surprises and examples of how it feels like to be in a hospice. Thanks for sharing this magnificent story for Father's Day.

Wow. Very powerful story as told by you. Nine years is an eternity and I am happy that they both got to see, hug and cry with each other.
What was he dying from at only 58? Not relative to the story, though I'm curious.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

This is a very well written story and I do believe that you're right about him not having all his business taken care of and that's why he couldn't let himself go. My son-in-law is a former emergency ambulance worker, and he has had many cases where he had to talk people into just letting him go to complete the dying process. I'm hoping that I have all of my business finished and so when my time comes in, it may not be all that long because I 86 now I'm hoping that when I go away will be peaceful and my children will be pleasantly relieved. Patricia .

Beautiful story! Your pacing was good, and your role as observer/participant was well balanced. My only question was why a man so young was dying, and I kept hoping for an explanation.

Hi, William
This is a real touching story about a father wanting to make peace with an estranged daughter
That hospice worker is worth her weight in gold. I would call that going above and beyond
The brother seems pretty clueless about the whole thing. He may have been able to do more through the years to get father and daughter together. But maybe it took the father being on his deathbed to allow him to let her back into his life. His grandchildren are more than likely mixed race. So there you go, the cycle of life.
I really enjoyed reading your story
Some gunk in this line. But it is in many other places as well.
" terribly wrong had happened.Ã? When "
Good job. Thank you for sharing.

I note this is non-fiction which makes your write all the more powerful in its theme of forgiveness. It's so interesting that, when we're close to death, there can often remain 'unfinished business' that needs to be resolved before the final letting-go. In this case it was important that this reunion take place between father and daughter. I like that simple sentence: "It was a good death." We should learn to see that poorly people are often preparing for their exit but need to feel their work is done. This is beautifully told. Well done! Debbie
