It seems like mistaken identities van still make the best of an awkward situation and create a new bond, perhaps with this one it increase their ability to remember old friendships, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

Thannk you Roy. I've had a lot of awkward situation in my life where I failed to recognize the person who seemed to know me well. I am not good at recognizing faces.

This flash fiction story, Mistaken Identity, is a funny situation where the two strangers think they are not. I guess if one can get the other to pay the check it would be a first great meeting.

Thank you Bill, That would be nice. I've had people recognize me when I have no idea who they are but I always pretend hoping they might drop a clue.

I must say that having lunch with a complete stranger, at least most of the time, would be better than eating alone. Well, maybe, as long as they would shut up long enough that we could eat. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Ric. I don't mind eating alone at hom but in a restaurant, I'd prefer having someone with me.

I feel the same way as you. Just last week, two women came in the restaurant and sat at the table beside me. There were five empty chairs at my table, which looked foolish. The one woman asked why they had sat me at such a big table alone. Not knowing what to say, I said they were making plenty of room should any attractive women want to join me for dinner. She turned beet red, but laughed. Then, I asked, so would you ladies like to join me for dinner. They looked back and forth at each other, probably thinking I was a nut, or the Boston Strangler reincarnate. But one spoke up saying, why not. I stood and pulled out chairs for the both of them and we had a great dinner and good conversation. But my $30/dinner ended up costing me $150. But it was worth every dime not to eat alone.

I'll bet you were the gentlemen who insisted on paying for their meals. IF they expected you to pay when they joined you, that would have been presumptive. It seems you're no longer squeezing the buffalo off the nickle. I'm glad you enjoyed it. LOL

A couple thoughts:
You don't really need the quotation marks since you've broken the dialogue up in two different fonts.
I don't think you need the "thought Paige" in there.
Paige and Elaine certainly do have something strange in common, and the one woman apparently didn't see much of her brother's wife!
A fun entry for this contest, Beth. Good luck.

Thank you, Pam. It was really hard for me to believe that a woman actually thought I was her ex-sister-in-taw. It might have been a few years since she had seen her sister-in-law but she swore I had a double.

I expect you're not the only person who has carried on a conversation with someone you can't place...which obviously inspired this story. It's fun and could be the beginning of a friendship. However, the title and the logline are both misspelled. Since this is for a contest you might want to fix that.
MISTAKEN IDENITY should be MISTAKEN IDENTITY
and wird ought to be word.

That's funny! I remember you telling me that you have some amount of prosopagnosia. I like how the women are able to get over the initial mistaken identity and still enjoy having lunch together.
Best wishes in the contest!

A fine entry for the contest, and it is not too uncommon. Even when I visited the prison one of the prisoners thought she recognised me. I couldn't place her - and wondered if she was one of my ex-students! Best wishes for your entry!

I think a lot of people identified with having something like this happen. You don't wanr to just say I don't know you.

Oh I definitely suffer from this condition but can keep up a conversation for some time, desperately trying to recover some clue! This flash cleverly incorporates a very relatable experience. Well done and good luck! Debbie

Thank you Debbie. It is good to know I"m not alone by trying to keep a conversation going and look for clues as to who this person may be who seems to know me. Beth

Hahahaha. This is pretty funny (well, okay, not the Author's Notes part) because it evoked a memory my mother shared once: She and Daddy were in line at the bakery, a man before them in line said to my mother, "We know each other, right? You're were my daughter's teacher." "No," my mother said. "But, yes, I do think we know each other. Did you used to work with my brother at Kodak?" "No," the man said, "Did you grow up on Sotheby Street?" "No," my mother said. "Did you used to sell insurance?" "No, but--" Finally, my father, who's ordinarily a very quiet man, cut in. "Why don't you two just give up and accept the fact that you actually DON'T know each other." HAHAHAHA.
So this delightful story of yours brought me a good smile. Hope it does well for you in the Flash Fiction contest!! xo

Thank you Rachelle. I'm glad you like this. I was shocked to have a women actually think I was her ex sister-in-law. When I met the man I would marry for the first time I thought, I knew him from a party I had gone to where I had to fight him off. Wrong dude.

This reminds me of an experience once. This was in the days when I drank. I was walking along the block, and a gentleman went over to me smiling, addressing me by my name. I asked him who he was. He said, "If you don't know, I'm not going to tell you!" Probably over fifty years ago, and I still wonder who he was.
