The candy bar scene reminded me of when my son was five and hid under a bed and had a bowl of candy. We went through the apartment and all around the complex screaming for him and praying he wasn't kidnapped. Then finally he pops up from under the bed with big chocolate smile! I love reading these revealing stories of family. It reminds of Earl Hammner and the Waltons.

No problem. You don't have to read them if you find them a challenge. I think the those who lived near times they were written enjoy them more than my family because they trigger their own memories.

I can see that but my memories were different being from Philadelphia
Now, my wife with her family farm life would enjoy it more

Yes, I heard that swallowing the watermelon seed, Also, there was one about being born in the cabbage patch. The kids these days have no idea the kind of get up we women had to use when we had periods, My Mom dod not believe in tampons. I didn't get to use them until I got married. Your story was very familiar in many ways. You write these stories so well.

Thank you Karen. I think they could have come up with something that would make is want to avoid watermelon. I hope the move is going well.

Lots involved in a move. This is temporary while I find an apartment or house. Tired. sore. happy. :-)

I enjoy your journey back to your youth and smile at the similarities I see here. I too was told a "pregnant" stomach was inevitably the result of swallowing a watermelon seed. I also had my "secret" favorites but enjoyed your colorful descriptions of each of yours! I can't say I ever tried that willpower on candy (no way!) -- but I was a spendthrift and loved opening my Piggy Bank and counting the coins as they grew exponentially! Can you imagine a child today being happy with a 25-cent allowance? By ten, my grandkids were asking for cell phones!

Beth, great story. I could relate to many lines in your story, I'm guessing we are the approximate same age.
Values years ago was different then today and even though we tried to instill some of them into our kids, times got the better of them,

Thank you John. I'm pretty sure I'm older than you, but things didn't change that much over a decade. Now things seem to be changing more repidly.

I truly love these tales, each worthy of more than a mere five stars. Fathers love to spoil their little girls. I'd come home daily with aq little doll or treat for my daughter till I was told to stop. There were dolls and toys all over. My mother was the disciplinarian, often using aq well-deserved strap. My father was worse, always letting me know how much I shamed them. But God saw fit to help turn this around before his death.

You are so kind with your reviews. If my dad had a problem with something I was doing. He yelled at mama about it but not me. I don't know why he never wanted to correct me. He had a bad temper and some he gave Mom a hard time. He got better before he died too.

My mom had to be the disciplinarian because my father either worked or was resting before work much of the time. With his meager salary, he supported us well.

It is the rotten leadsership we have that has destoryed the value of the dollar. No wonder kids now days think spending every dime id the thing to do. Good one, Beth.

Excellent. And well written, too.
There's no way that I could recall details like that when I was three. Your memory is extraordinary.
I'm certain I would not get past 3 candy bars. I would declare myself the winner and go back to eatin' 'em.
Best wishes.

I find these stories absolutely charming and always enjoy getting into the mind of your three year old mind. Here you tell us about the important hierarchy of relatives who influence your growing-up in some way. Your inquisitiveness and secrets stand out for me. Quite clearly, you have a very active imagination that needs plenty of stimulation (Grandpa Weir understood that!) A couple of edits:
never seem(ed) to lose it with me; world(')s best cornbread.
Another excellent chapter, Beth! Take care Debbie
