11 stepchildren! OMG! No wonder she thought of children as work and trouble - she had a lot of work and there had to be a few bad apples in there.

Well, I don't blame him for not liking surprises, but I understand Lucille's hesitation if he has a temper.

A good chapter for this biographical story, Beth. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Pam. Things were different in those day. My grandmother was a widow with two babies and a widower with eleven children needed a wife.

Beth, you've told a cute story here. I'll bet your father was one happy guy after you arrived. At least, I hope he was. Most men are softies when little girl babies arrive. Nicely done. It's special. Curious, any brothers or sisters come along after you?

Thank you. Yes my dad was happy I was girl. I think he would have given me a hard time if I'd been a boy because he adored my three daughters but he was kind of mean to my son. Don was afraid of him.

Interesting. Do you think it might have had something to do with the way he was treated as a young boy by his own father?
reply by the author on 06-Mar-2024
I don't think so. He was a red headed freckle face kid and maybe boys teased him in school. By the time I came along his hair had turned black. He had a lot of men friends so I'm not sure.

Unsolved mystery. My husband was very standoffish with our grandchildren, even with our sons when they were young.

Now I know why you are the only child because your father didn't want to have children. But you were surrendered by relatives so it seemed fun. Annie Jane had too many. How did she end up with so many stepchildren?

Well done.

Thank you for a great review. I was surrounded by people who cared about me but they were all adults. We didn't even live near anyone my age.

That is a very difficult situation for Lucille. It would have been so nice if they could rejoice together over her news. Just as well you were a girl!
My son was the opposite to Glover - he was very keen to have a baby, now has three beautiful little girls. A lovely story, well written.

Thank you. It turned out he was happy with a girl. He adored my three daughters but he did give my son a hard time.

A bit peculiar. I kinda wish Lucille had bit the bullet and said something right off.
Just a couple little SPAGS -
The one great regret of their life had been there - (their)
Newman was in Texas and Eugene was in Michigan. - Needs a comma after 'Texas'.
Best wishes.

Thank you Wayne. After five years, Mom had found it didn't take much to get Dad into a rampage. She wouldn't lie, but she would tiptoe around the truth to keep from setting him off. They were together 62 years but there was a lot troubled moments. Thanks for noting the spags.

I was the opposite of Glover. I wanted to be a father and, as I told you earlier, our daughter was born early in marriage. I hope Glover gets to be a proud father and overcome his misgivings about children. Your story is always leaving us wanting for more.

Thank you Jim, I'm glad you like my writing. I'm glad I turned out to be a girl because it turned out he liked me just fine but he didn't not like little boys and he would have likely made my life miserable.

Before my daughter was born, sometimes I had to be a substitute job coach for a group of adults we had working at w YMCA. The head let us use his office, which was covered with photos of his daughter from youth to adulthood. I used to imagine how great it would be to be a father, and God blessed me.

I simply love your stories about your family, but these new ones that take place before you were born are marvelous. I like how they fill us in how things were so different and life style on a farm didn't have any similarities to today's world. Well done.

Smiles, Carol

Thank you Carol. Yes things were a lot different in those day. They aren't a lot of writers left around the want to write about things from that time. I didn't exactly witness all of it but I got my information first hard from those who did. I drove everyone nuts wanting stories from their past.

Thank you Dolly. I think as I get older maybe I've lost my filter. I don't seem to leave much out these days. I wouldn't have had the nerve to put that in earlier. Dad didn't want kids and Mom worded it so it would sound like it was his fault she was pregnant. She wanted kids badly.
