How creepy and frightening. Good thought to keep the keys handy - they can do a bit of damage if necessary. I am glad you were okay. Yes creeps are often cowards, but can still be dangerous. Good sense of drama and danger in the writing. Good wishes for the contest.

Thanks, Wendy. There were two other similar experiences in the city. One was a close shave and it happened when I was sixteen, but I'm here to tell the story. :)

Just as well! I have heard about an alarm which can be attached to a key ring. Just pull off the end to trigger it - and any attackers won't be hanging around!

Hi there,

you did a good job with this short piece. All components in place for an actual story (it's amazing how often that doesn't occur!). Good tone to the write, nice introduction of jeopardy and tension.

Spot on with word count.

All the best

An unnerving experience to be sure. Thank goodness the crowd arrived in time. These people may be cowards, but they are still capable of doing immense harm. A good contest entry. May it bring you a hefty reward.

Thanks so much, Tony! I was pretty lucky on this occasion. It helped that this was clearly a kneejerk reaction and he hadn't thought it through. :)

Oh my gal,
how terrifying for you. Keeping the keys in your fist was a great idea. You need to employ any means possible to defend yourself. I don't know if you're allowed to use mace or bear spray in Australia for self defense. Bear spray is an effective deterrent because it's made with the juice from hot peppers and will incapacitate an aggressor for a few minutes. I'm so glad you stood your ground and can be here to speak about it.
Blessings,
Tom

Thanks so much, Tom! It is fortunate the creeps are cowards and since it was purely opportunistic, he hadn't thought it through. :)

That gave me the creeps. Thank goodness you were okay. Very effective descriptions building tension and fear.
And I love the final conclusion!

Thanks, Julie. Yes, this is one of three occasions I can remember where I was alone in the city and feared for my safety. One creep ran away, a second one turned out to be harmless, but the third chased after me after I broke away from him and I was only able to get away by locking myself in a visitors' lounge at the Victorian Arts Centre. I was also only sixteen at the time.
