Ah, yes, I shopped at one in Connecticut until they went out of business!
Haha! It seems that both Joey and you missed the part about being naughty or nice. Naughty boys don't get toys. But it sounds to me like he was acting out in this new life he was being forced to live.
This is an interesting and well written story to read. I enjoyed it very much.
Good luck in the contest.

Yikes. So do you visit Joey often at the State pen? That is one seriously naughty boy! And very creative about it, too.
Interesting story, for sure. (I noticed that I kept reading faster and faster, so big-time compliments there!) It broke my heart, though, for so many reasons, not the least of which was Joey. I'm a teacher, so I recognize pain-sponsored acting out. And your sister, too. (How is she doing all these years later?)
You made this memorable, Mary. Well done. xo

Rose retired and is doing well.
I have written stories about Rose. As for Joey, he moved in with his father when he was 16. He did well in his job. While we called him Joey, his real name is Carl Joseph. He refused to be called Joey. His grandfather was Carlo. His uncle was Carl.Heavily old school Italian so Joey's attitude is more in line with the old Italian.

I'll have to look through your portfolio for those posts about Rose. I bet I would love them. Thanks for the updates. xo

This is so fun, sweet and endearing. The Ghost of Christmas Past loves this one, and Santa too. One of my brothers in a nutshell. Sending you my best today as always and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.

I don't think my mom or dad either one ever owned a credit card, When I got married my husband fresh out of service owned a JCPenney card and Shell gas card. It was well into the sixties before I could get on in my name. Now I wouldn't own one if I couldn't pay it off at the end of month You sound like a very generous person but no one wants to see kids disappointed at Christmas. That boy does sound like a little imp. I really enjoyed your story.

Thank you Beth. My dad never had a credit card either. But it reminded me that he often got loans from Household Finance that served mostly lower income families.

A thought provoking and interesting piece. Behind all this is the fear of an addiction to credit. I definitely had that and racked up debts over £50000. Thankfully now I am debt free and living entirely in my monthly pension. X

I learned my lesson and curtailed my spending. My sister Rose was remarkable in keeping to a budget.
I could still use some lessons from her. Thank you for the review.

That little boy would have sat down slower and with a little discomfort if he had been my kid. Wasting food is a huge no no. He is old enough to understand cause and effect. giving kids things because they are lonely is no way to raise them. You do not prepare them for life by shielding them from consequences.
My opinion only. Karen

Whatever does one do?
Well written piece.
You had good intentions, buying expensive gifts that you couldn't afford for a couple demons. I hope you wised up before birthdays came around.
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you Wayne. I appreciate your review. Babysitting them for a few years, they finally smartened up without hitting them on the side of the head.

Oh gosh, boy does your story bring back memories... I saved up $10.00 every year from my 10 cents a week allowance and babysitting. My sister and I would walk down Hollywood blvd and look for gifts...I always bought
our father mens handkerchiefs for $1.00.. can not remember how many I got... Funny but I can not remember what I spent the remaining $9.00 on.
I really loved your story but wish there was more about your credit and what the children thought and did with their gifts...

Thank you for your review. I thought about adding the kids gifts but I thought it would be too long.

I think we have all been touched by a credit card debt in our lifetime and we learn not to spend too much money as debt is like a noose around our neck. I enjoyed your entertaining memory and your generosity at Christmas here as you brought some Christmas cheer to a household with no money. I enjoyed your wonderful story Mary, love Dolly x

Oh yes, it can be a bit of a dampener for a kid to be so naughty, when the sweet, innocent nature of a child isn't there it can it be a little discouraging, I taught my girls the proverb "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child, but the Rod of correction can drive it far from him." That's one of the options which has been society's huge mistake, juvenile crime has never been worse, with gangs of 11,12, and 13 year olds violently prowling and terrorising the public, but giving is the power of this season, long before Christ came on the scene, beautifully wrutten Mary, blessings Roy

Thank you Joey outgrew his wild ways. Most of his acting up was due to the family situation
Thank you for your review and blessings.
