I'm rating this, though it isn't a story. You taught me things I never knew. The only one on the list I knew was a murder of crows. Now, who decides these things? Did God tell somebody? Is this all made up from the mind of some man? If I call it "a bunch of parrots", will they drum me off this site? Anyhow, this should do well as you did teach us a lot!

18th century zoologists from England. Modern man has turned everything into herds, flocks, schools, and packs. We as writers should bring the language back. Thank you for thru sight!
-
I'll try to remember all your quiz language so I could make others think I'm really smart!
-
You are smart my friend. Smarter than I, but I do set a low bar.
-
The lower the bar, the higher I seem!

Eight would be the win. Most people didn?t know more than one. I found this interesting. Maybe others did too?

Ha! I did already know two of them: crows and flying geese. This entry went beyond a usual every day list of knowledge. It was a fun and intriguing exercise and kudos to you for helping us learn something new. I really enjoyed your posting!

Thank you! We shall see if others agree!

It really is fascinating what we call groups of animals. I wonder what a group of humans would be called. A well written piece, I enjoyed reading it. Good luck in the contest.

A group of humans is called a crowd. Ha! Thanks for the well wishes. We shall see if others agree!

Okay, I knew one...a murder of Crows. But what also occurred to me? Who the heck makes up these names? And who "certifies" that the names are right or should be adopted by the rest of us? Inquiring minds want to know. Good job for the contest. Terry.

18th century English scientists. We have just evolved into calling everything schools, flocks herds and packs. Maybe we shall start seeing some of these names of Fanstory! Too funny. Now we shall see if our cohorts were amused.

A good image to go with your topic. I think the people who named these groups either had a sense of humor or said the first thing that came into their mind. I like your introduction sharing what you learned, and then turn it to the reader to see what he or she knows.
I did not fare well. I give myself half a point for thinking I had heard of a convocation of eagles but wasn't one hundred precent sure. I did know that crows were a murder. I think I will have to take the remedial level of animal identification, ha, ha.
A clever post for the contest, and I learned a lot. Good luck!!!

I just came across the contest today and now I've come across an entry.
Pathetically my answer is two:
Chickens - peep
Emus - mob - only because earlier this year I did a post with emus and read about this.
This was fun. I have no idea about the word count.
Cheers...

Thanks, John! Lots of people like it. This may do well.
Comment from Wayne Fowler
Well done.
You can now call me an ignorant idiot. I got one. I wonder, though, if some of these words are regional, or at least not widely accepted. I've been an outdoorsy type my whole life. I've researched squirrels and made adventures of traveling to find and photograph both white and black squirrels. This is the first I've ever heard of dray or scurry.
Best wishes.

I heard of the dray as a pregnant female squirrel on a wildlife show. These are all old English terms. We have evolved into calling everything herds, flocks, packs, and schools. I think, as writers, we should use these terms where appropriate. Very amusing. Now we see if our cohorts agree.

I knew a murder of crows and a mob of emus, but while I've heard many of the others, I couldn't have told you which animals they described. This is a really fascinating list and an absolute must for trivia nights! Thanks for the share.
