This is a good write about growing up in the fifties, and the differences. I too am of that era and at one stage thought I would like to do Accountancy as I worked and loved the bookkeeping side of office work. Same opinion as your dad. The fact I hated school I'm not sure how I thought I would cope with university.
Good read, and good luck in the contest.
cheers

Thank you. To be honest, I'm not sure I could have made it in college either. However, I would have liked the chance to try.

So very true. Back in the day, women were not supposed to be anything but the homemakers. Fortunately, all that has changed. You've written and engaging piece. Thanks so much for sharing and good luck. Ulla:)))

Things were different in those days. I wanted to be a mechanic like my father, but it was unheard of then. I still learned a lot about cars and could fix them until they came out computerized. I've had a good life. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment. A lot of the folks on this site grew up in the fifties and sixties.

I found your autobiographical story very interested and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Things have changed so much over the years especially the roles of women and their expectations. Good luck

This was an excellent post. Very well written and very true to life. That's just how things were back then, and you seem to have accepted it with grace.

Although there are many things wrong with society today, I think it is definitely improving in some major respects, like increased opportunities for women and much less bigotry than previous generations.

You told your story so well, and I'm happy that you feel fulfilled in your desired field, even though it isn't quite what you had hoped for. - Jim

Thank you. I sure would have loved to be a veterinarian. Women mostly stayed home and raised families in those days. My mother never learned to drive a car or write checks until after my father passed away.

Yes, time sure have changed, but "for the life of me" I can't see where they've gotten any better. As a matter of fact, we seem to be going in the wrong direction in most areas. :-) Fine story. Wish I had a six. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I agree. I think things are getting worse every day. Sometimes, I'm glad I'm on the short end of life instead of just beginning.

You are right. Thing were very different in the fifties. It never occured to me that I couldn't do anything a man could do if I wanted to but most of the time, things that interested them didn't appeal to me. Once I started working I did fall into jobs women hadn't done before in the printing industry. It was something I had no problem with. I got married a year after high school too. I enjoyed your story. You told it in an interesting way. You should do well in the contest.

Thank you. Yes, I often kick myself for not putting myself through vet school after I divorced my first husband. I didn't have much of money, but I could have gotten a grant or loan. Oh, well, hindsight is always better.

So, in the end, "Alls well that ends well" is your solution to being born female. I understand how you must've felt unable to chase your dream of becoming a veterinarian. You told your story well and this was enjoyable to read.
Thanks for sharing what it was like to be a girl in the fifties. I was born in the fifties so I remember what it was like and it wasn't fair by any means.

This story reminded me in some ways of my mother's experiences. She wasn't permitted to finish her final year of high school or attend university because she was a girl. As late as 1968, in a progressive country like Australia, my mother had to cease paid work at a national bank when she married. Thank God I was born in the 1970s and had the privilege of a great education and freedom to pursue a career. Thanks so much for sharing this.

Thank you, and thanks for sharing the interesting facts about your mother. It must have been even worse in Australia.

You sound like a strong woman who knows her own mind. You have faced the challenges of fewer choices and still came out on top as you have been successful in carving out a good life for yourself. I would say that being a woman has made you strong and determined and if you had been a man you may not have been quite so forthright and successful. I enjoyed your honest post about your life and I wish you luck with the contest, love Dolly x x x
