Bad news is always hard to take. How mundane that another person is being called in to possibly hear that same awful result of tests. Good story with very few words.

You show both the trepidation of the patient awaiting her results and the less than compassionate Doctor in this Dribble flash fiction, Debbie. Unfortunately there are some like that around. Good luck in the contest. Cheers
Valda

Thank you so much, Valda, for your kind review and thoughtful comments. Yes, this doesn't speak for all but, in my experience, some (with their desk barriers and insensitive manners etc) have a lot to learn about doctor/patient relations! Take care Debbie x

This is great, the first paragraph of this short story really makes the whole thing order an excellent use of words and do it in so short, a space really is remarkable!
I like the fingers in the ears picture so many times I would have liked to have done just the same!
This short story is grammatically perfect aesthetically pleasing and very well written a great submission! I hope you're having a great night!

Being told your tests have come back possitive is bad enough on its own, but to be told it in such an uncaring way, with a large desk between you is monstrous!! This is an excellent flash fiction story, well done! Good luck in the contest!! :) Sandra xx

I would have flown out of there also. There are doctors just as cold as your dribble fiction demonstrated. I once had a rheumatologist tell me my fingers were going to curl up. He even demonstrated. I left his office and never went back. My fingers never curled.

This is a great short story that resonated with my spirit. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you so much for this! I really value your lovely review and understanding here. I appreciate exactly your experience. I was told all the negative issues that would develop and, when someone tells you that so assertively, you're forever expecting them to occur (they haven't entirely). Nothing positive. I've also had a patronising drawing sketched (on a large dividing desk!) that could have been much more simply and effectively explained in a few words:( Thank you again for your time and thoughts. Debbie

You have painted a gut wrenching picture with your words here. The feeling of being that patient and feeling like just another chart to see is very vivid. We have all felt something similar, if not quite as dire. Emotion evoked! Excellent job. Thank you. Diana

Wow, thank you again! I'm so pleased you nailed my intention. I know it doesn't chime with everyone's experience but, for me, the doctor's 'bedside manner' (there should never be a desk/barrier between patient and doctor) and the receptionist's coldness leave a lot to be desired. Thank you so much for your time and thoughts. Debbie

It can be so scary waiting to hear back results after medical tests and you managed to capture that well in a few short lines. This also shows how many doctors can be so cold when delivering results and then, for them, it's on to the next person. A well written, engaging piece. Good luck in the contest.

We don't know if you are pregnant. going through menopause, have a cancerous lesion, have a broken collarbone, or what is going on with your health.
I hope you are okay. Karen

It doesn't matter does it? It's obviously serious and partly fictional. A generic take on the indifference in doctor's surgeries (in my experience). There shouldn't have been the barrier of a table/desk between doctor and patient and, well, receptionists (in my experience) are usually plain beastly! Thanks for the review, Karen, always welcome and appreciated. Debbie x

This was a great post. I wanted nurse to call out
"Wait". But we got "next" instead. This post was very well done. You said a lot in fifty words. Sarah

Superb job with this dribble flash fiction! I loved your loaded verb choice of "marooned" showing how lonely and desperate the narrator feels while awaiting for the medical verdict. And the "positive" for a bad illness like cancer would be awful. If it were "pregnancy" it could also cause the patient to flee. Hope this does well in the contest!

Thank you so much, Helen, for your kind review and thoughts which I always greatly appreciate! I just wanted to convey a sense of sheer panic when, sometimes, these appointments take place and a criticism (which I know isn't always the case) of a lack of compassion in the doctor's surgery. For example, there should never be the barrier of a table/desk between patient and doctor and receptionists can be plain beastly (again my experience). Bless you for your good wishes. Debbie x

Interesting. Now that I recall my doctor visits here, we never have a desk or table between us. The desk is usually facing a wall and only holds the computer but there is no barrier between doctor and patient.
