A lovely piece of further autobiographical writing. This house sounds idyllic. Forty-three! A mere slip of a thing. I'm 59 and we are expecting our next child. So exciting! Life goes on, even in retirement.

Firstly how wonderful about the house and I can easily understand how you always imagined it was meant to be yours. That sad death and your son's conscience cleverly intercedes with those childhood anxieties that so many parents face and which give your post another dimension. And then the pregnancy and Evan's uncertainty.... Thank you Debbie, I really appreciate your excellent review and comments. Thank for pointing out the past tense I missed. I actually had written further but someone suggested I change it to farther which they said had to do more with distance. I read about it and either seemed okay but I'm used to saying further.

How wonderful that you were able to buy that house! God is good. My son-in-law became a father at 51, and is loving fatherhood, and I am sure Evan was able to enjoy the new baby just as much as the previous three. Your story is quite fascinating, and written very well.

Evan did love the new baby even if he did wonder if this was going to prevent his dream of an early retirement. She is a joy to be around now but she wasn't so eary to get past those teen years.

You have a very good memory. I hope Blackie ended up having a good life in the country. He was sweet dog that didn't like bicycles or dog food.
I just could believe someone else was going to buy the house I was so sure was mine. I really appreciate the review.

Parallel paths again. I am nine plus years my wife's age, and I was thirty nine when we adopted our first child. WHen we asked when we could apply for a second, the agency let us know that couldn't be as their rules would not allow a placement to anyone over forty, thus better guaranteeing both parents would be on duty through college.
Two years later we moved to NC and the same agency came to us asking if we were interested in a second. I reminded my age and the response said that was Virginai policy not NC. Nearly three years they found a match, now I saw my retirement being forestalled. It wasn't.
I was the #1 sales rep in the Carolinas for 14 years, and stepped away at fifty-eight.

Thanks Wayne. I'm sure Blackie was getting away with biting bicyclers before we arrived. He was an outdoor dog with no fenced yard.
