Hello Wendy,
This is listed as fiction, but I guess there is quite a bit of truth to it? It's a lovely story one way or another, at least until you get to the part of hurting your back. We've only had one dog our whole married life, and I fear that I won't have another. I love dogs so much, and when I see them on the street I stop and talk to them, and watching them on TV makes me smile, but I can't go through the pain of loss ever again. Rigby is cremated and will be with us at least until we're gone. I'm sorry for you loss. It's like losing a family member. Have a blessed day.
Tom

Thank you very much Tom. It was all truth except I didn't really hurt my back - and I did help with the burial! Yes, they are definitely family members. Sunny, my present dog will be my last. I think dogs grieve too much when their owners go, so I will continue till after he goes - hopefully. But he's only eight so we should have a good few years yet with him. Thanks again.

What a unique burial idea for your beloved pet. We bury each of our dogs in the side yard and toss some shells on their Graves. Only one is buried on the opposite side of the house. Her place is marked with a hand made cross and is covered with literally 500 shells. I felt this one. Gretchen

Thank you very much Gretchen. That's a nice idea to cover their graves with shells too. They are family. Glad you enjoyed this story.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I do understand my 85 pound Labrador, Codi died while we lived in South Carolina. We couldn't bury her there because we rented the property. We were only going to be there 3 years, military. So, I had Codi cremated until I could figure out exactly what to do with her. Codi has a beautiful oak box and has made numerous moves with us. She now has a place of honor on a shelf in my closet. When our boys come to visit they all check Codi out. Good luck with the contest.

She too was much loved. It is so hard when they go. Many thanks for sharing and your kind words, and for your good wishes for the cpontest. All are appreciated.

Great contest entry. I have not read all of the entries as of yet, but have read enough to know this is a contender. The story is well-told with with enough respect for the situation and enough humor to make it a pleasure to read. ann

Both this post and the planter are beautiful tributes to your beloved pet. She must have been a very special companion. You never mentioned her name, but perhaps that was intensional. Good luck in the contest.

Yes, it was intentional, but I think I will add one more sentence with it. I always called her "Honey", although that wasn't the name she came to me with. Thank you so much for your most encouraging review and good wishes.

Wendy, this is a lovely fact-based fiction story you have told. I think it is a very good entry for the contest, and thank you for entering. The only suggestion I would make is that you might consider telling us her name. You might even consider... "I added a little plaque that said...(her name). Food for thought. Excellent work. Terry.

Oh Wendy, that is so sad! Because we outlive our lovely doggies, but we must, or who would look after them when we're gone? I have 3 funny/sad burial tales, and two involve donkeys. They may it to these pages someday. PS you write extremely well. Jx

Yes, you are right. Dogs grieve too, so it is best for them to live a long happy life and then go before us, so they don't have to cope with confusion and distress and grief if we go first. Thanks so much for a super review.

This is a very good entry in the contest, Wendy. If there was a sad dog story contest, it would do well there, also. I didn't let Sam read this, since it would have upset him.

No, best for Sam not to read this one! Yes, today makes four years. Fortunately we now have Sunny to love. Thanks so much for the review.

Having a dog in our house, is like having additional children. I'd say, they are equally loved and cared for.

You posted a nice story in honor of ( you never told us her name).

Nicely prepared.

Her name was officially Tuppy but I always called her Honey. Yes, equally loved. Thank you for your lovely review.

That's so sad. Her name was Honey, wasn't it? I'm sorry that you had to deal with a back injury on top of all that grieving. You certainly gave her a respectful and loving burial. And she's still there.

Thank you Helen. (To tell the truth I didn't hurt my back, but it was for that contest about hurting one's back so I made it a fictional story. I did actually drop her the last bit, my poor precious Honey). You have a great memory! And yes she's till there, with a beautiful garden on top.
