I feel like that about basketball. Watching my three kids play. I relate the sounds of shoes squeaking on the court and the banging of feet on the bleachers. Watching your sons play was like having a part of you on the field. This was a great piece. Thank you for posting. Gretchen

Of course. I remember those squeaky shoe sounds when I played and my younger son played. Great memories.
Thank you for reading.

This post made me think of my precious dad, who was an avid Phillies fan. In the mid fifties, he bought a 21 inch TV (back then 21 inches was large), primarily to watch war movies and baseball games. He had been a member of a baseball league and was proud of the group photo of all the members in uniform. My sisters and I were not interested. When he watched games on TV we would hope he fell asleep during the slow moments. He never did. Had we been boys, I'm sure he would have had us on a ball field. Thanks for this beautiful memory. I was glad to read how you felt. It may have been how he felt.

Oh I recall the 21 inch TV. It was like a piece of furniture.
I am glad my post brought back those memories for you.
Thanks for such a wonderful review.

I wish I had a nickel for every hour I've sat at ball games. Believe it or not, I taught my sons to pitch, and they were exceptionally good pitchers. I enjoy this story about baseball. Brings back memories.

Aw, I knew this was our resident baseball fan as soon as I saw the title. I said, "John!"
My mother was actually the biggest baseball fan of my family. You couldn't pry her away from the Atlanta Braves game. She loved them and had to have her Ball Park franks with mustard ready to go on game day.
A delightful read that brought back many fond memories. Sending you all my very best.

First two paragraphs take the reader right out to those ballparks. Time to get the season underway.
"summers days" should be summer days.
Lots of good times, and memories, portrayed in this posting.

From my earliest childhood memories, I remember, listening to the radio announcers as they broadcast the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. I had never seen a baseball game, but I had a pretty good picture in my mind of what was happening. As children we lived on I'm very small farm and did not have money to buy baseball bats in and balls so our brothers went to a tree on our farm. They cut a big branch from the tree and carved into a baseball bat for us to play with. Since we did not have baseballs, we would go to the Osage orange trees that were on our property and Pixie, Osage oranges off of the tree and use them as baseballs. When they were soft, we would just throw them away and get another one to use as a baseball. Patricia

Thank you, Patricia for this spectacular review. I?ve gotten some of my best and longest reviews from this post.
Your story about making your own bat and using oranges is incredible. It would also lend to a fabulous story. Do you have any photos of the bay? Did you run bases after hitting the orange? What did you use for gloves, if anything? Did you have an orange grove?
You?ve gotten my creative juices working?
Fantastic review, thank you again.

Oh, man! what a delight your summer memoir is, John. It seems like your childhood and mine were duplicates, though from different sides of the U.S. But baseball unites us all. Your description of your childhood years was immediate and colorful. I was right there shagging balls with you. Your post demonstrates that as a writer you can't go wrong by writing about what you love. All the flavors and fragrances were there! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Here are a few notes I made as I read:
Major League Baseballs opening day is right around the corner. [Major League BASEBALL'S opening day ...]
I got that delicious stick of pink bubble gum. [... that changes to the flavor of cardboard in 10 minutes. Yep, I remember that!]
I'd lay on the living room floor [I'd LIE on the living room floor...]
Those are small oopses that you may want to consider. But most of all, huzzah! for your super post!

Thank you, Jay for a super review. I?ll make those "oops" corrections (I?m never sure about lay & lie). I guess when I speak I say lay.
I appreciate your generous words and stars!
John
Note- what team were you a fan of?

As a kid, I was a Phillies fan. That would have been back around '49. I pretty much lost interest in following them, or any team, by the time I got into high school and stopped playing baseball.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you must like baseball some?...LOL
I couldn't find any flaw or change that I could suggest to make this already great story any better. The writing was done very well, making it a smooth read.
Thanks for sharing your passion for Baseball with all of us,
Brandon

Baseball has always had a special place in my family. Most don't keep up with the ball clubs, but when a game is planned, we gather and play hard. We play insomuch that losing is even fun.
Thanks for the read.

Your love of baseball comes through loud and clear. I do not have exactly the same experience. I am a crafter and I love teaching my granddaughters different crafts. I do not see any room for improvement. Have a blessed day.
