I could just picture you as a little boy going through this. You made me laugh, and I thought the story was really cute. Little boys do seem to fall for a little girls at about that age, and sometimes the things that happen in our totally amusing. I am glad your world became a little better in the end. Patricia.

We baby boomers have so
many memories and nostalgia. This is such a
touching and heartfelt write.
It seems no matter what age
we are, rejection hurts a whole lot. I wrote a poem
posted on FS a few months
ago titled, "Valentine's Day,
1968," it's similar to your
great post here. Have a
splendid Sunday. ~

I suspect things haven't changed much since 1962 in how a girl might stand a young fella up...break his heart...only to give him hope the next day. I know that because I was sixteen in '62. Very well done. Terry.

Lol, we can be so weak in our resolves not to do something. Did you find out why she didn't come? I wondered if her parents forbade her. I wish I could say I was like her, clever, and energetic but I can't. I was a mouse. I really enjoyed your story, but I'm glad your broken heart was healed within hours. :)) Sandra xxx

Thanks, Sandra. We remained friends for the next few years before she moved away and then we moved after eighth grade (that?s another story I?m working on).
Thanks do much for being a loyal reader.

This work has reached the exceptional level

She must have had a reason she didn't show right?
She could have forgotten she told him dead be there and got sidetracked and it maybe a case of she just forgot. At least he was smiling again in the end.

Great story. The reader entered into all your emotions and the devastating grief at her not coming over to play. Did she ever explain? You built up the story well with details of your projects at home, and how you wanted to make a good impresion. Well done. Very enjoyable read.

I loved this. Thanks for conjuring up similar memories from long ago! Second grade for me, too! His name was Richie... By fate and miracle we were "paired" to walk down the aisle together, in Sacred Heart Cathedral...
(Girls on the left/boys on the right)-

As we practiced our "march" for our First Holy Communion he asked me to wait for him so we could walk home together!

Oh my... I sat on the cathedral steps until dusk.

Life was never the same!

(Oh...until the next day when he came bounding in to class, smiles and freckles... and yanked on my braid!)

Smile...

I think this is a nice story and well written. But... and I mean this with all respect. No way do I believe you remember all this detail from 1962 in the second grade. What were you seven or eight? Sixty years ago?

I mean, it can work just as well as a fictional tale (it likely is).

I very much enjoyed your post. The one good thing about broken hearts at that age, is that they usually mend as quickly as they are broken. It's funny how such incidents stay with us all our lives.

I do recall those infatuations that developed in grade school. I must have fallen in and out of love a dozen times a year. Your story is very well written; it's almost like talking face-to-face with you. That takes talent.
