I enjoyed reading about this amazing poet, I would like to read more of his work. I also enjoyed reading about your family life, I admire people who are self sufficient and are able to provide their own food. I like the analogies to Black History Month and Valentine's Day. Both have meaning and are relevant to all of us.

Hello my sweet mermaid friend! That was a picture from my window to my front yard during one of our December, 2022 blizzards. Weird how that set the tone for our new year. We received -40 temps with -75 degree windchills, 20 plus feet of snow per blizzard, and all a month earlier this Winter. We haven't received any horrible weather yet this year. LOL, depending on what you call horrible.
And our Summers can typically go through at least twenty, 100 plus degree days. I remember one of our most enjoyable fourth of July's with our children, because we, (Glen and myself) sat under a shade tree and allowed them to mist us with cool water and us them. Which obviously involved much laughter. The luxury of Central air didn't come with the laughter, just cool air. So I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.
Thank you my dear friend, for your incredibly kind words which mean so very much to me!

This is a well-written article about a very special poet. His early life sounds more austere than that of our children. Your life with your husband was much the same as ours with our first family of children. When the next four came along they were glad they didn't have to work so hard. You picked a beautiful song. There were 2 places where a word is missing. He ( ) in Detroit . . . . . . did it ( ) warm and . ..

Dearest Jacqueline, your words mean so much to me. Thank you for them!
I am proud to admit that things were tough. It's not the special clothes and things that we were able to afford later on, that brings the kids to tears when they thank me. It's those memories of the special Halloween costumes and the many clothes and homemade gifts they saw me put the time into. They thank me for memories, not things. They appreciate the love and strict mothering, instead of wishing I had given in. Some of God's greatest gifts are the ones He made us work the hardest for. Because of that, I have had such a blessed life. And I really think is part of why He rewarded me by bringing me here to find the loveliest friends like you. More blessings upon blessings, and I am so thankful for you my dear friend

You wrote a beautiful story, beginning with the poem. The importance of that four letter word, which is so much needed today in our land of violence and diversity. Your story described the average American struggling to survive, but the most important teaching to the next generation. I hope you and your family enjoyed a happy Valentine's day.

Thank you for the sonnet by Robert Hayden, the history and the analysis. Your commentary is insightful. I like how you compared his life to yours and celebrate both in their own way.

You are so right, Debi, to bring your children up in the way you did, to teach them that saying thank you doesn't cost you anything, but can make the other person feel appreciated. If only more parents showed their children how much they are loved, that would do so much for their confidence and shows them how easy it is to love back. I found this a delight to read, my friend, you had a hard life but love for each other and bringing God in to join the family can do nothing but good and it lightens out load. Love you, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

-Is that your photo, Debi? It is a good one for your story.
-I am very familiar with the poem. I was an English teacher and
it was in the textbook we used. I didn't know a lot about the poet, though.
-You did a good job using the poem as a basis for your life and growing up, then passing on good teachings and love to your family.
-I didn't know that Minn. could be that hot.
-I agree with you about the ending of the poem; I think that is what he was saying that he didn't know about the type of love his parents shared and why.
-You and your husband didn't have it easy in the early days of your marriage, but you made sure your family and each other always knew you loved them, and still do.
-A lovely piece deserving of my last six of the week. Hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day!!

You are very welcome and deserving of the stars and review, Debi. I remember those days of cooling off with the water sprinkler, many moons ago!!

Thank you so much, Debi, for this well-thought out article on the poem and on life in your home. I like the paragraph: " Every child deserves to be brought up in a stable home, with love, and happiness, joy and confidence in the world and their future. Every human deserves to be loved. All deserve to live in the spirit of this day, spread the word. God demands this of us!" Like you, we did not have a lot of money and material goods when we were raising our children, but there was lots of love, and God has blessed each of them very much.

You are welcome, Debi. If we never went through hard times, we would not appreciate the good ones.

Hi Debi, thank you for sharing this poem. Before reading this poem by Robert Hayden, I never heard of him. I like how you mirrored your own family life with his, and illustrated how your lives were different yet the same. I especially liked:
Children really do live what they learn, and learn what they live
(This is so very true for the most part.)
D, I have a saying, "A person can never be too loved or too thanked."
When I say that, many people's ears perk up. Truth rings loud.
Well done. Perfect photo. I have a feeling that your husband is still chopping wood, albeit difficult. Hope you had a great Valentine's Day, and a most perfect steak. Xo. M
