Sandra,
You've written a very nice poem.
I remember all my GOOD grade school, high school, and college teachers. From what you've written, your students think a lot of you.
This is a great presentation, Sandra.
Good luck in the contest.
Blessings,
Cindy

    Cindy,
Thank you for your comments and review. A fraction of them about 80 have found me on FB and we are friends. My oldest former student is now 40. She and her mom are my FB friends. I love it.

Sandra, my high school Spanish teacher had to be my favorite. He was a learned man who emigrated to the U S. from the same city region my grandfather did: Calabria, Italy.
I bumped into him on occasion after high school, Army, and after college. We lived in the same town. He spoke Italian to my dog, understood my breakdowns, was proud of me when in 89 I went to Spain as an exchange student, and didn?t question why I had to leave PSU after three years (a breakdown).
I?m glad you keep in touch with your students. That must be really special.
Good luck with all your writing.
    Blessings,
    Cindy

I am sorry you had breakdowns, but I am glad you had someone to understand. He sounds like a teacher any student would be blessed to have. Thanks for sharing.

You must have been a brilliant, creative and much-loved teacher. Thank you for sharing the lovely photos and the meaning and context for each. And I LOVE your profile picture. Just beautiful. Your poem is also well-written and very creative. You will definitely be leaving a wonderful legacy, as all those things mentioned in your poem indicate how much love and joy you gave to others - a selfless life.
Well done. Best wishes for the contest.
Wendy

This poem has a very positive uplifting message to it.

This is a wonderful verse:

My years as park ranger and soldier
are worth mentioning after I die.
Perhaps my poetry will not get older
because we need poems creating a thinking cry.

Very inspirational Master Poet. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your years of service to the community, the students you taught, the people you served, as a soldier and a park ranger. You will be remembered even for your poetry.

Legacy is something I think more and more upon as I age. The sentiment in your poem was spot on. Rhyming was good. The meter was a bit erratic. I think if you could clean up the meter so that the lines had a consistent number of beats, this would be an outstanding poem.

Thank you for your review, and I appreciate your suggestion. However, I have never written by meter because I have always written free verse. I typically do not write rhyming poems. Give me an example of a line break using better meter.

As hair turns shades of gray, (7)
and my movement slows down, (6)
what will my legacy say, (7)
here, in my own hometown? (6)

So we end up with two 13 beat lines, each broken down into a 7 beat beginning followed by a 6 beat finish. Carry that through the whole poem and it creates a fun flow for the reader.

Whew! I am unsure if I can do it, but I appreciate you teaching me this. Thanks!

Hi Sandra,
This is a very nice Alternate Poem on what we all wish to see when we find ourselves looking back as we grow older. As for me, I stopped dying my hair just near the beginning of 2020. I think I did it for New Year's one last time, (although why I don't know... I never do anything) then I realized to keep up with the white, I was doing it so much that my scalp was starting to hurt. That was enough. Now, it's longer than it's ever been, and it's all white.
I wonder why I didn't let it go decades ago. ;)
Happily gray and staying that way,
Susan :)

I hear you, mine was thinning from the dye and perms so now I have just wash and wear hair. It's a short assorted gray afro. I am so glad. It is freeing. My profile photo is before my freedom. Thanks for your review.

Now you seem like the kind of teacher I would have liked to have had. I'll bet you inspired a lot of students to strive for their full potential. This was a great poem. I really enjoyed it. Gretchen

Omigoodness!! I could not love this more!! And there's no way in boogieville that THIS one gets beat out of first place!! You have left a GORGEOUS legacy. It's obvious by this beautifully composed poem and also the accompanying photographs. Just LOOK at how your students are interacting with you!! You have touched so many lives with your inner beauty and belief in them. I am SO very proud to be able to say, "Sandy Nelms likes me! She considers me a friend." You're my brush with greatness. xoxoxo

Omigoodness Rach, you are soooo generous with your compliments. Thank you for all you do to show me that there are people who root for others. You are indeed my friend, and I am proud of that fact. You feed my soul. Thank you Dear One!

LOL ,LOL.. It's because you let me be free and crazy as I can be. Most of us go through life restraining our inner selves. Then along comes a person who says let it rip. You are my let it rip person. XoXoXo
