There's a lot of very curious names in England, upper Slaughter is one, we have a Cape Disappointment, Wagga Wagga, Woy Woy, Wollongong. Wollomombi, etc, But the funniest name I've come across is South Piddle in England, beautifully written Helen, blessings Roy
Typo : With a native(s)

Well, I must say this got my imagination brewing. I was thinking about our crime-ridden cities of today. What popped into my mind was 'Theft-ville' and 'Muggings-land.'
I'm trying to remember the exact line from 'The Wizard of Oz,' but I'll sort of paraphrase. Instead of a welcome sign when you're driving into a new state, they could post a sign that reads: I'd Go Home If I Were You. Thank you for stimulating my sense of humor, Helen. Regards, Lilly

Thanks for reminding me of that fun book/movie! I hope you'll add a chapter to this book if some names come to you. At the bottom of the post, you just click on Add a Chapter, and a new chapter number will be assigned to your post. Hugs and blessings!

I enjoyed the stories of offbeat place names. A favorite memory for my husband and me is our trip from Seattle through most of the Oregon Coast - so vary different from our southern eastern coast and so very beautiful with the big rocks on the shore. We did see some very strange names, but I don't remember them? (Maybe (are) in the first line of the last paragraph?)

Thanks so much for your helpful review, Verna! I changed that opening sentence to "Other place names include" as I didn't like two "there" words in a row. Appreciate you catching that! Hugs!!

I enjoyed reading your story about all this strange names for places in Washington. I am glad I don't have to live in any of them, just writing the names in your address would be depressing. Thanks for sharing.

Love the names, especially George, Washington. We have funny names in Arkansas. We have Nail, Toad Suck, Cotton Plant, and Deer, just to name a few.

This is a hoot! Yes, Washingtonians certainly do have a sense of humor in keeping the names you mention here, Helen.
Thank you so much for sharing this essay. I have never traveled the Coast and would never have know about this. Enjoyed. Nancy:)

Thank you, Nancy! I'm so glad you liked this and at least you can imagine what it's like here. Foggy, rainy, and cold.
Hope you'll add a chapter to the book about fun places there !
Hugs!

Thank you for sharing the dark humor city names. They made me laugh. In Spain we have funny location names too. There's a street called, "Sal Si Puedes" (pass through if you can) lol the street was poorly made. Well done.

Lol. In the South Bay Area near Palo Alto, there's a street called Alameda de las Pulgas! I am not sure if there was a "flea market" there. Lol. Thanks so much for the super review and many stars! Hugs!

This was indeed rather entertaining and highly educational, Helene. I loved the pictures that went along with this piece of writing. Who would have guessed that so many names would have come from something called Dismal Nitch. Very well done and greatly enjoyed. Blessings, smiles n hugs!

Thank you so much, Alie. I was only going to write about Dismal Nitch and then I remembered about all those other depressing names in Washington's history. It makes me wonder what the Native tribes called the places. Hugs!

You are most definitely welcome, Helene. Ahaaa, something I can research, lol. Blessing, smiles n hugs!

Your post was fun to read, Helen. You did a great job
sharing the history of these odd named towns in WA.
We have our share in Texas--one is Cut-n-Shoot. I like
how you gave the facts, the maps, and some great
historical perspective of the names.
Thanks for sharing, Jan
