Did your dad ever teach you how to tie a tie? There are many ways to tie a tie, but the simple way takes not as long and goes faster. Music has made its way into your story; lessons are important in life, and I hope none of them were ever difficult life lessons for you. Because life's dreams are not always hilarious.

A remarkable piece. It told how wisely parents lead. Many times, we are not of aware of their principals until later in life. You seem to have good parents that led you on a good road to life. GOOD WRITING.

For me the best part of what you wrote is that you listened. All the best advice in the world is useless if the one hearing or reading it, ignores it or goes against it to the point that they do not take it, do not use it, do not adhere to it. Warnings about smoking, excessive alcohol use, drug abuse, etc. have been in place and advertised for years, as the number of deaths from ignoring these warnings pile up. So, what is the use? Wisdom comes from acting wisely, making wise decisions. Congratulations.

"They were so smart they were stupid." This line is true. In my line of work, there's so many people with various degrees of the MD, PhD variety, but some lack in common sense. I'm glad your dad gave you advice to help you, and that you're happy to this day. Good luck with your contest entry!

Dear Mystery Writer,

Is this my brother? hahaha This sounds exactly like my family. Well, more like the way my hubby and I raised our kids, actually. Before they'd leave the house we'd always say, 'Act like a Corum'. The family name means something. Now we just say, 'Remember who you are.' They not only have a good name and a good reputation - that took decades to build, but they are children of God and should act like it.

We also never allowed quitting. It makes a difference! And when a boy is raised where his word means something THAT makes a difference, that means something, too. I really liked your post. It's at the top of my selections so far! Good luck!

This piece, Life Lessons Learned Run Deep, should touch all readers with its truth. Our lives are not made up of big events, but daily positive decisions which result from a solid base.

I found this: I was allowed (to) try any sport or club I wanted (to).

The second *to* is redundant as it implies the same verb infinitive used earlier. Although we all do it, the last word is unnecessary.

Happy day.

This piece brought back memories of my dad. He didn't teach me a lot but the one bit of advice was boyfriends come and go but true friends are for life. I keep that one close to my heart. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

This is very well-written and very well told. You were most fortunate in your parents. I had a wonderful father who taught me the lessons both your mother and father taught you. Best of luck in the contest.

An interesting and well written story. Now, what do "lefty loosey" and "righty tighty" mean? (I'm not American - is it do with sports or boxing?) The school of common sense is a good one with a good reputation, and it's not far from the School of Hard Knocks. Best wishes for your entry.

What a great contest entry. Well written and relatable as far as the lefty loosey righty tighty goes. I'll bet you still use it today I know I do. Great job here. I wish you much success with the contest.
