A surprise ending--but it shouldn't be. I find myself downgrading my achievements sometimes. But then I remember we learn from our mistakes and concentrate on the lesson. Good luck in the contest.

This is stunning. Probably a lot of people would say the same things about themselves. The narrator focuses on the things he hates most about this person--his lies and back-stabbing are among the short-comings. Then we find out he is thinking about himself. Why do we keep doing those things if we hate ourselves for them. Wonderful presentation, excellent word choices. Best of luck in the free verse contest. judi

"which stands where the actual person...lies." What a moving soliloquy and self- analysis. Hollow Man is worth reading more than once to get the full effect. The skin color used in the presentation adds to the full effect of analyzing what is truly under one's skin. Great job!

There is no person more qualified to criticize me than me. Only I know all my shortcomings. I alone know about the shortcuts taken, the lies and deceptions. While I hate the bad things I have done, I do not hate me, for I fully realize that I am not perfect, never have been and it is a pretty sure bet that I never will be.

Thanks, nomi, for giving this a look.

Interesting! It seems the narrator has a very strong conscience. However, to be at such odds with one's self could make it hard to live in peace. He needs the Joy of Christ.
Best wishes in the contest!

Bill - OUCH! This poem is a real zinger and packs a lot of punch that most of us can relate to. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies. Stay well - Jerry

Billy-buddy,
This is a passionate and powerful poem - which I did NOT like. Sorry. I often think of the fact that you've been here a long time but I only started following recently. Hugs-

This is not autobiographical. It was inspired by this picture of Kevin Bacon in the film Hollow Man.

Be easy on yourself. We are not perfect and we should all be glad that we are healthy and can move around at our age. This is a self-depreciatingly funny.
Well done.

It's funny how scripture reminds us that if we hate ourselves, it's impossible to love others, but then I do know people who are so good to others, but put themselves down, beautifully written Bill, well done, (hope you love yourself, or at least care) well done, blessings Roy
