Excellent entry for the 5-7-5 Poem contest. I love the Wheatfield with Crows by Van Gogh'. Great imagery and alliteration.
For short 5/7/5s and haiku I always connect lines grammatically to improve the flow.
What I mean is something like this....
flurry from a field
as murder of crows takes flight --
damp earth smells of musk
Good luck!!

Van Gogh was definitely an interesting person. I am sure people have had many debates on some of his meanings. I enjoyed reading your contest entry. It causes the reader to pause and think. That's a good thing. Good luck with the contest.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for the superb review! Yes, Van Gogh was one of a kind for sure. I have always liked his painting, ?Wheatfield with Crows?. It is so haunting with its stormy skies.
I appreciate your time to read and critique my work.
All the best :))

I only recently learned this definition of "murder." You have made excellent use of your seventeen syllables to describe that sudden flurry of joint movement.

Van Gogh will be smiling from wherever he has parked himself!:) Loevely Haiku! Crows have a very unique position in all religions. In the Indian context, they play a large part in myths and rituals for the dead. I enjoyed your lovely short poem. Thanks for sharing!

very fun poem about a murder of crows taking flight from a cornfield. leaving behind a musty smell. Liked the discussion of the various group names for birds. Did not know they went back to the middle ages. Interesting that murder of crows came about because of how crows "murder" the prey so to speak.

Hi Jake,
Nice to meet you, sir! Yes, a group of crows is called a murder. Who knew?
I have always known a flock of Larks is called an exaltation but murder for crows? LOL
Thank you for an interesting review and thoughts :))

Wow...I learned something today about "the murder of crows as a collective nown...and how well you projected this 5-7-5.
Strong imagery, almost Hitchcock-like, it delivers, as should, even before reading your very interesting and great set of notes. Bravo.
This should be battling for the win, I liked it very much.
As usual, you never disappoint.
My best wishes.
Have a beautiful week.

Great ekphrastic poem using van Gogh's painting. It does feel ominous and the "murder of crows" is apt. I especially liked the alliteration such as "flurry, from, field" and engaging the sense of smell. Best wishes in the contest!

Startling use of murder--I saw that once before. Brilliant 5-7-5--stunning use of imagery and four-way alliteration in FL/FL/F/F. A tangy closer for the olfactory buds!

Comment from Gloria ....
This Van Gogh is definitely a vigorous painting, and you have captured the stunning beauty very well.
When birds, and particularly crows are startled into flight they truly do take the scent of the earth into the air with them.
A fine entry into this contest, and I wish you great luck with the Committee. :))

Hi Gloria,
Oh thank you so much! Always a treat to hear from you. I have always liked this painting ?Wheatfield with Crows? by Van Gogh. It makes me have strong emotions, a sadness somehow.
I really loved your comment about the birds carrying the scent of the field up with them ?yes, they do that especially on damp days. The painting looks like it had just rained.
Thanks again for a quite memorable review :-)
