Hi Craig, Yes the hibiscus is beautiful and I love the plant but in small doses. In my area of Spain, where I live you can see them used for hedges, even. It kind of dilute the beauty of the flower which is truly beautiful. I liked the message within your 5-7-5 poem. Good luck. Ulla:)))

I think Hibiscus flowers are beautiful flowers and are much deserving of a longer poem than a 5-7-5. Though I'll be the first to admit I'm not the one to do it. Very nice job. Good luck in the contest.

If we write and read of peace, perhaps we will find it. I think of that when I read this pastoral piece. Your theme is limited and powerful. Your words are artful. I like that you connect the trumpet shape of the flower to its function in the poem.
On a personal note, our new hibiscus plant has produced only one blossom. Quite the disappointment. Not much peace offered here. I continue to watch for it though.

We can always hope, Debbie. Or maybe we can at least have our own little peace patch in amongst the turmoil.

I'm pleased you picked up on the physical appearance aspect. I hope your plant grows up to be as productive as ours is. I imagine ours is quite old. It's about 12' tall at a guess, and quite spread out. It also has some sort of yellow fungus/parasite on its stems, which we have never bothered to try and identify. It doesn't seem to bother the bush, as it produces masses of the most lovely flowers. The bees love it.

A beautiful bloom, beautifully described in 5-7-5 form. This is the classic flower of the south seas that, tucked in the hair of dusky beauties persuaded Captain Bligh's crew on HMS Bounty to mutiny.

Beautiful! That variety is also known as the Rose of Sharon and is the National flower of Korea. The more colorful ones on shorter shrubs with wider petals grow in Hawaii and is the state flower (hibiscus brackenbridge). Enjoyed the alliteration and the "trumpeting" and the contrasting "harbinger of peace."
