A very deep offering for the evening here, Mark -- to visualize such an event in the mind's eye... ;) :) Thanx for sharing your insights here... ;) :) Yvette

Yvette,
It was a tough day for my family, especially my children. They spent parts of many summer vacations with him and his family - their three children are like siblings to my two.

Passing of a Friend

Hello, Mark,
I'm sorry for your loss. It's hard when friends die.
The Japanese death haiku is a genre of poetry that developed in Japan. They tend to offer a reflection on death--both in general and concerning the imminent death of the author--that is often coupled with a meaningful observation on life. The practice of writing a death poem has its origins in Zen Buddhism
Well done. I'm sure Renato would love it.

Gypsy,
He did not die from Covid, but from the big C. It is hard to lose someone with such a strong connection to my family, including my children who spent part of many summer vacations in their presence a continent away.

I lost a close friend to cancer last year. It was very hard. He fought a good fight and lived longer than expected. He was an exceptional person and friend.

You have made excellent use of your seventeen syllables in this deeply moving piece. It really resonates with me. I recently lost my only brother and his sweet wife--during a period of just two weeks!

I recently lost a friend of 30+ years, so I can truly relate to the Speaker in this poem who sits on a precipice "gazing across the void." Grieving and remembering our times together is all we can do. Rod

Rod,
Yes, his passing hit my family hard. My two chiodren spent parts of many vacations with him and his family a continent away. We all cried with the news. He had the big C, not Covid.
And yes, we have good memories of those friends who are no longer in our physical presence.

Mark,
I read your piece "Passing of a Friend" and I thought. There will be a lot of writers and readers on this site that can identify with the elegance of your piece. Then I broadened my thought process to include: I bet there are a great many people nation wide and world wide that can identify with the heartfelt words of your piece.
I wish, that that was not so- but sadly it is.
Passing of Friend was beautifully written Mark- and for the writing and the message you have earned a sixer from me.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts through this piece.

Yes, the news of his passing hit my family hard. My two children spent parts of many summer vacations with him and his family. He died from the effects of the Big C, but not Covid. You are right that one loss versus the multitudes who have become ill and/or died from this pandemic is only personal to my family, his friends, and his family.
Mark
P.S. I would rather earn sixes for non-elegy written poems. But, I do appreciate your sentiments.

Susan,
This news hit my family hard. My children spent parts of many summer vacations with him and his family. He and his family are special in our hearts.
