This is a good review. It covers the characters, theme, modern relevance, and author's circumstances. I haven't read this book, but I've read others by the Bronte sisters. What Jane Austen glosses over and alludes to, the Bronte sisters say plainly. It is astounding how many of the classics discuss things we're still discussing. The more things change, the more they stay the same, as they say.

that's for sure i was struck by the relevance of this book in light of the right-wing attempt to end no fault divorce and make divorce much more difficult to obtain and to bring back the stigma of divorce all in the name of promoting family values

Let's BOO see what you have written here, bud! Lot of extra goodies via the author footnotes. Hehehehe! Read the background. Here's the list of the 50 books to read. Bold indicates I have read it. I read that also.
I recently finished reading Anne Bronte's The Tenant of Windfell Hall, widely seen as a proto-feminist novel. Anne Bronte is one of the three Bronte sisters who wrote insightful novels set in the English countryside of the early to mid-19th Century. Oh, how did you like that book? I may look up some of these books. I like The Catcher In The Rye, and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. There's a ton to read here! You provided the readers with potential books and prose to disect. You did a marvelous job!
