All good information. I am still unclear. His editors are useless, He decimated your ebooks, he does no advertsing for your books, he gets you no publicity, besides printing what does he do?
Just asking. Karen

I don't do ebooks. That editor was fired. He has since got better editors. He did do my web page, and put an author's page on FaceBook and amazon. So he does do things, just really frustrates me, also.

Authors are like artists, we are never satisfied. Just like the artist thinks they can change a color or add more shading. We always know we can change a word or a phrase, etc. We must drive Editors a little crazy. Your editor catches your strange habits, then you payit forward. My inner editor reminds me of the overuse of 'that' you pointed out to me. I am ever indebted to you. Congratulations for your hard work. I am in the same process.

I have the bad habit of omitting the small words, to, be, etc. I read the sentence as if it's there.

This is why I appreciate me Chromebook. My cat discovered this proofreader treat when sitting on some keys. Suddenly, a voice came from nowhere. I finally figured it out even with out having to sit on the keys to investigate. If I highlight what I want read aloud, I can check for missing words or odd sounding phrases. I'm so glad my cat discovered it.

My new PC and my laptop have that. The first time it happened I was shocked and couldn't figure out how to stop it. LOL

LOL the same happened

Hi, Barbara. This is an exceptional inside look at the business of writing for publication.
As usual, you do a great job describing the intricacies of a complex profession (or hobby, or just a personal passion). I enjoyed learning more about how you utilize professional resources and just a bit more about you as an author. Thank you for sharing. - Jamison
P S A giant congratulations for being selected to read at the Meet the Author Fair!

Thank you for sharing this information about publishing. My husband published two novels. With the first one, he tried to do the editing himself. With the second one, he paid an editor. It was well worth it. I look forward to reading both of your books. Sarah

HI barbara,
My books run about 90,00 words. - 90,000?
It's difficult to eit properly on FS as we don't get the full manuscript and as such can only do a very limited job, those that try to hep at all that is! lol
It's definitely hard to fit writing in around work life. I also have a daughter with special needs who requires a lot of input and my wife isn't in the best of health, hence my own slowing down.
this was a very interesting piece.
I had a weird moment at the start of the summer when I was attending and author's fair with a friend of mine. She'd just had her second book published and I was helping her set up when someone came up and recognised me! It was a little embarrassing as a lot of my friends don't know I write - my writing is something for me! lol But it was also very gratifying.(although they were more shocked the time a couple came up to me to thank me for marrying them! - I do that as
well)
All the best

Thank you for the wonderful support. Many people, here, don't realize my novels are that long. I guess because they're split up into smaller postings.

Sounds like you are on a good path. Who knows, maybe the next book will be the "one". Totally appreciate your reviews, they are not sugar coated. Too much of that on this site.

I'm really pleased for you, Barbara. I would love to hold one of my books in my hand, but living in Spain there's not much help of an editor around here anytime soon. And an editor I need. Good luck with every you're doing. Ulla:)))

That's 90,000 books, Barbara - only typo I noticed - good editing!
Well, as a person who has been told for thirty years 'you should publish that' - and increasingly so from friends here, I am trying to get my act together with my small cycle of poems, 'Rites of Season' - but I realize the foreword will be ten times as long than the poems - so distilled are they.
This blog, is both revealing and encouraging, because you tell us about the nuts and bolts of being a published author - maybe I shall bookcase this piece as essential information.
The price of books is an interesting phenomenon - zero on Amazon is a two edged sword - great if you have a bulging bank account and a desire to be read, but a disaster if vice versa! Personally I would go for paying my rent and being neither bankrupt nor homeless! (watch this space!)
So, here is an enormously helpful set of hints from 'one who knows' and many (if not, most) of us will benefit greatly from the wisdom it contains.
Thank you, Barbara.

Thank you for the wonderful support. It's 90,000 words. "My books run about 90,00 words." Am I missing something? At my meet the author, I met a gentle man who has had books of poems published. I got some info from him, if you're interested.

Might well be, Barbara.
Just finished first draft of foreword for poems 1 - 3. Hard work - it's so divergent!

Quite inspirational, Barbara. Thanks for sharing your journey and the work effort you put in to make sure the book is as good as it can be. The editing is a key part of solidifying the final product, and I agree that if your name is on it, so is your professional reputation. Thanks for sharing, but it sounds like you have a lot more work to do. Good luck.
