The teacher forgot to say, "but there are exceptions." Still, today when writing we come upon words the student missed and that god for Spell Check I guess.

HAHAHAHA. I agree! So. Many. Exceptions...to SO many rules of spelling in English! I also think how confusing this language must be when it comes to pronunciation, especially in terms of the "ough"es: through, though, thought, tough...

Hehe, I'm reliably informed this 'rule' is not taught in schools these days - thankfully! They teach based on sounds nowadays, which is more reliably for speech but seemingly pretty awful for written English. When I was at school, we also had 'magic, magic E!' which was about how pronunciation changes when hat becomes hate, or mat mate. Thanks to drug connotations, that one's well and truly retired!

Yes, there are so many exceptions, which makes English a very hard language to learn. For those who learn English as a second language it is extremely difficult. well written.

that's a good one except I'd leave out "receive" because it is in the "i" before "e" except after "c" rule that you just mentioned.
All the others, though, do break the old rule.
