Considering this is the first free verse poem you've written ... didn't you do well!!!! Congratulations on winning this contest, it was so well deserved and I concured with every line. Just a hat, how could anyone say such a thing? So many young men never had the chance to get married, have children, grandchildren, they willingly gave all that up to serve for their country and people at home. This was a very moving poem and I liked the message. To someone this was just a hat but it symbolizes so much more.
Wearing a veteran hat is how we show our patriotism,
It honors those we served with and those that fell,
It symbolizes honor, duty and sacrifice by us and our comrades,
A lot of people have forgotten that
I don't even know how that man got a hold of the veteran's hat.
I like all the emotion that went to this, your imagery and visuals and the excellent artwork.

Your take concerning the hats is right on. Mine got me a free steak once, LOL. My son, who served in Desert Storm, said, I knew I should have worn mine instead of the ball cap. Well done, and well said. Thanks for sharing.

Although I am not American, I know how much that hat means. Our boys wore a slouch-hat, one side turned up and an Emu feather for the 1st World war; the men who gave themselves were called the Aust Light Horse Brigade. They took the wells (oasis) at Beersheba on horseback, beat the Turks and saved the lives of their comrades because it was the only water-well in that desert. I totally agree with you; these hats are sold in stores and should not be.

capitol on January 6th. I hope Americans get their patriotism back soon.

This is a wonderful tribute to those who served to protect us, to those who lost thier lives in the process. I think that many young people don't understand these sacrifices because they aren't taught about them. Thank you for sharing this poem, I hope others share it with thier children.
