A shocking poem

Static

by tfawcus

The crackle of static, a snaking blue flame
That leaps from the doorknob, a brief spark of pain
Alive in the dryness that's taut as a wire,
A snapping synaptic, nerve endings on fire.

I've fled from the city's great seats of power
The frenzy besetting us every fourth year;
The hustings are busting, all froth and bubble
With soapbox hopefuls predicting more trouble,

Political half-speak, political spin
Obscuring with half-truth - election to win -
With animate spitting and pinpricks of fear,
Ecstatic electrics intended to scare.

Electors are static, refusing to move,
Ingrained in their prejudice, stuck in a groove;
The gramophone's going around and around
With a grating, frustrating sameness of sound,

So I've made an escape to my hidden lair
Perched high in the mountain whose dry, static air
Resounds with the shock of coyote's shrill barks
To vie with the thrill of these arcing blue sparks.

Static - a kind of electricity
Static - communication interference
Static - motionless

People pronounce coyote in different ways, depending on where they come from. I pronounce it kai-oat-eh.
