Maiden Flight
by Y. M. Roger
Paul was in constant conflict with chipmunks in his yard. One Saturday morning, he hollered for some assistance. Mary found him holding his shoe over the bottom of their downspout.
“Hold this,” he said, “I’ll be right back.”
Dutifully, Mary squatted down and held the shoe until he returned with his shop-vac.
Replacing the shoe with the hose end of the vacuum, he turned it on…in reverse.
Leaves and a very fluffy chipmunk flew out the top of the downspout and hit the ground. The dazed chipmunk sprang up and quickly zipped away.
Grinning, Paul rejoiced. “He won’t be back!”

Although chipmunks are native to woodlands, they thrive in suburbia. The Ohio State University Extension calls the eastern chipmunk "one of the most common wildlife nuisances." Chipmunks eat bulbs, fruits and young plants, but their most costly behavior is burrowing, which can cause structural damage to sidewalks, stairs or even foundations. [www.hunker.com]
