Veterans Day

by sunnilicious

He grew up happy
for another day off from school,
but never knew a veteran,
and always felt empathy
for those that fought with their lives
to protect their country.

When it was time for college
He decided against it,
and joined the military forces.
He made it into a career
and traveled the world;
War after war.

He learned about guns
He learned about combat
He was trained in the Army
and became someone with a title;
Combat Medic Military Occupational Specialist.
He worked as hard as he played.

He started service
not knowing
that he would travel the world,
through a series of deployments,
without time for love
and making his own family.

He retired after twenty years,
and returned home
for life as a civilian.
He worked at a local hospital
and found a mate for marriage,
love and children too.

He always admired the Military.
He joined and served on Active Duty.
Now, considered Retired Military ---
He cries on Veterans Day
for his friends that died for this country.

War is a terrible thing and I hate it. It's just stupid. However, it exists... And so I must acknowlege all those that have served to protect their country (and me in this country). Thank you. God bless you all :)
