Lovely Flowers

100 Word Story Contest Winner 

In dark blue mourning clothes, she'd stroll by my garden every day. Today she stopped.

"Your flowers are magnificent . . . such sweet perfume!" Her cheeks flushed pink.

I arose, brushed damp loam from my knees, and smiled. "Merci beaucoup."

"You are a fine gardener. The owner must be proud."

I laughed. "I am both, but can't resist beauty on days like this. May I offer you this perfect rose, Madame?"

She frowned. "You flirt with a--a widow, sir!"

"No, a lonely man gives a lovely woman a rose, hoping she'll return for more . . . someday."

She smiled. "Yes, Monsieur, it's possible."
