But For a Door

by michaelcahill

But For a Door

Raise up the window; Spring is here--
I fancy this sweet girl.
But will the soft breeze bring her near,
a step, a leap, a twirl?
Perhaps my thoughts are all my own,
my dreams are those I dream alone:
I love her dreams ...
I love! Her dreams
may drift into a place unknown.

Be quick, the window, Fall's arrived
Again, the girl-- oh my!
She glances here. (so I've surmised;
although my heart might lie)
Like glitter that's been stricken shy
the leaves fall subtly dancing by,
and with her, dance ...
And with her dance,
I dream she calls me out to fly.

Close fast the window. winter's here;
through frost a shadow strolls.
It's her who's shunned me, yes it's clear,
I doubt she even knows.
I contemplate the dark closed door,
the one not opened e're before.
It's not my fault!
It's not? ... My fault
was watching when my heart cried, "More!"
