Jaguars

by Cecilia A Heiskary

Jaguars are one of the big cats
Who have really great stats
Their numbers are 173,000, which is great
They roam day and night, with no debate

South and Central America revere them
While poachers want to condemn
Pelt, claws, and teeth are gems
It they are caught among the stems

This big cat loves to swim
Water doesn't bother him
They have powerful bites
When they catch their prey in sight

Rainforest are their preferred home
Here they feel free to roam
Habitat destruction hasn't affected them yet
If it continues it will be a big threat

Right now their status is okay
If it keeps up they will pay
Let the Jaguars alone today
Then they will live to play

Habitat destruction and fragmentation has reduced their prey. Though they are not on the endangered list they are considered, "near threatened" because of poaching and other factors as stated above.

In Asia they kill these cats and boil their whole body to make a medicinal paste.

This cat has a powerful bite and can crush its prey's skull very easily. They are not the fastest of the big cats, but they can run up to 50 miles per hour.

They are an opportunistic hunter and will kill anything that is in their path.
