Idolization of an Abusive Parent

by Videl Sky

I am contrary, sometimes, just to be contrary.
Because though fighting, we’re talking,
And every second you scream at me in fits of rage
I get to revel in your presence for a moment longer.

And sometimes when I break my toys,
The sting of your sharp strikes on my face
Feel like they could be gentle caresses -
If only in the other universe down the road.

I used to be a good kid, but it didn’t do me much good,
And then I realized that the more I disobeyed
The more your eyes would lock right onto me -
Ready to temper me into what you wanted me to be.

And I wanted you to succeed – to lash out until I was finished.
Then you would beam and claim me as your best creation.
If only you could look me in the eyes one day,
And see more than scrap-metal hardly worth molding.
