in the dark the screaming never ends
A chapter in the book Screams of the Shadows

The Key fit perfectly into the pedestal, its crystalline edges aligning with the carved grooves. The moment it touched the surface, the chamber erupted in light. Sarah stumbled back, shielding her face as the golden glow consumed everything around her.
The screams of the shadows rose to a deafening pitch, then stopped abruptly. The air grew still, the vibrations fading as silence fell over the chamber. The golden light dimmed, receding into the pedestal, leaving only the faint hum of energy.
When Sarah opened her eyes, she was no longer in the chamber.
She stood in her living room.
Her knees buckled, and she sank onto the worn rug beneath her. The sunlight streaming through the window was warm and familiar, casting soft shadows across the walls. Her phone buzzed faintly in her hand, its screen cracked but glowing. The message was simple:
It's done.
Her eyes filled with tears as she looked around the room, the normalcy of it jarring after everything she had endured. The phone buzzed again, drawing her attention.
You chose balance.
She frowned, her heart pounding. "What does that mean?"
The phone's screen dimmed, the message disappearing. She stared at it, her mind racing. Then she noticed something on the table in front of her a black case.
Her stomach twisted. She reached for it slowly, her hands trembling as she unclasped the latches. The lid creaked open, revealing the same crystalline Key she had placed in the pedestal. Its surface pulsed faintly, the patterns etched into it shifting like smoke.
"No," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I sealed it. I ended this."
The phone buzzed one final time.
Balance is not the end.
The words sent a chill through her. She looked at the Key, its glow intensifying as if responding to her fear. The hum of energy grew louder, filling the room with a low vibration.
A faint sound reached her ears a growl, distant but unmistakable.
She turned toward the window, her breath catching in her throat. Outside, the shadows had returned, their forms moving silently through the street, their glowing eyes fixed on her house.
Her grip on the phone tightened as the screen flickered.
They're coming.

Epilogue
The world hadn't ended. It hadn't been saved, either. Sarah was home, but the price of her decision followed her. The shadows remained, watching, waiting. The Key was still in her possession, its power dormant but alive.
She knew she had only delayed the inevitable.
And next time, she wouldn't have the luxury of choice.
