in the dark the screaming never ends
A chapter in the book Screams of the Shadows
The Final Threshold
by marilyn quillen
The chamber collapsed behind Sarah, the roar of splitting stone and screaming shadows chasing her into the void. Her feet struck the jagged path as she ran, the case clutched in her blistered hands, its pulsing red glow casting distorted shapes into the suffocating darkness. Every breath burned, every muscle in her body begged for rest, but the sound of the creatures growing closer pushed her beyond her limits.
The path wasn't steady. It writhed like a living thing, rippling under her weight. Each step felt like a gamble would the ground hold, or would it dissolve into the abyss below? She didn't dare look back; the primal growls and scraping claws were close enough to feel.
Ahead, the void wasn't empty anymore. Structures rose from the blackness like ancient obelisks, their edges sharp and jagged, illuminated faintly by a sickly green light. They stretched high into the endless void, their surfaces alive with rippling patterns. The air around them felt heavy, charged with a sinister energy that weighed on her chest.
The phone buzzed in her pocket, nearly making her trip. She pulled it out with shaking hands, glancing at the cracked screen:
The door is in the tallest tower. You don't have much time.
Another buzz followed immediately:
They will do anything to stop you.
Her chest tightened. Who were "they"? Were the creatures part of this plan, or were they something else an unpredictable force neither ally nor enemy?
The ground beneath her feet heaved suddenly, throwing her off balance. She fell hard, the case skidding a few feet ahead. A guttural roar ripped through the air, and she turned to see the largest of the creatures breaking free from the void.
It was massive twenty feet tall at least, its form a chaotic tangle of limbs and jagged edges. Its eyes glowed a deep crimson, locked onto her with unrelenting focus. Smaller creatures flanked it, their angular bodies darting forward like hunting dogs.
Sarah scrambled to her feet, grabbing the case as the first of the smaller creatures lunged. She swung wildly, the corner of the case striking its head. The impact sent the creature skidding back, its body dissolving into black mist. But the others didn't hesitate. They surged toward her, snarling and snapping.
The path twisted sharply, leading toward the nearest tower. Its base loomed ahead, massive and unyielding. The golden glow of a doorway was visible at the bottom a stark contrast to the sickly green light surrounding it.
The phone buzzed again.
Run. Don't look back. They're faster than you think.
She didn't need to be told twice. She bolted, clutching the case against her chest as her boots struck the shifting path. The growls behind her grew louder, closer. She risked a glance over her shoulder and immediately regretted it.
The largest creature was gaining on her, its massive claws tearing through the path like paper. Smaller creatures darted around it, their movements erratic but purposeful. One leapt toward her, its claws outstretched, and she ducked just in time. The creature's momentum carried it over her, its body slamming into the ground and shattering into mist.
Another buzz from the phone.
The doorway will not wait. Hurry.
The golden glow of the doorway flickered, its edges pulsing erratically. Her heart sank was it closing? The tower loomed closer now, its sheer size making her feel insignificant. The hum in the air grew louder, vibrating through her chest as the path narrowed sharply.
Her foot slipped on the uneven ground, and she went sprawling forward. The case tumbled out of her hands, skidding dangerously close to the edge of the path. She scrambled toward it, her fingers closing around the handle just as a shadow loomed over her.
The largest creature towered above, its crimson eyes blazing with fury. It raised a clawed hand, the tips gleaming like molten metal. The air around it shimmered with heat, distorting its already terrifying form.
Sarah rolled to the side as the claw came down, the impact shattering the ground where she had been. Splinters of rock and energy shot into the air, slicing her exposed skin. She bit back a scream, crawling toward the path as the creature roared again.
The smaller creatures were closing in, their angular bodies moving with frightening speed. She pushed herself up, grabbing the case and bolting for the tower. The doorway flickered wildly now, its light dimming with every second.
The phone buzzed one last time.
You cannot stop.
Her legs burned as she pushed herself harder, her breaths coming in ragged gasps. The doorway was close just a few more steps. The ground trembled violently, cracks spidering out from the creature's footsteps as it charged toward her.
She reached the base of the tower just as the largest creature lunged. Its claws raked the air, missing her by inches as she dove toward the golden light. The doorway's warmth enveloped her, pulling her through just as the creature's massive hand struck the ground.
The roar of the creatures faded instantly, replaced by a deafening silence.
Sarah collapsed onto the cold floor, her chest heaving. The light from the doorway flickered once, then disappeared entirely, leaving her alone in a vast, empty space. She clutched the case tightly, her blistered hands trembling as she tried to process what had just happened.
The phone buzzed weakly. She raised it with trembling hands, her vision blurry as she read the message:
This is not the end.
The silence was broken by a faint, rhythmic hum that echoed through the chamber. Sarah turned slowly, her pulse spiking as she realized she wasn't alone.
At the center of the chamber, shrouded in shadow, stood a figure. Its form was indistinct, almost liquid, but its presence was suffocating. The hum grew louder, reverberating through her bones as the figure stepped forward.
"You've carried it this far," it said, its voice low and resonant. "But now, you must decide."
Sarah's grip on the case tightened. "Decide what?"
The figure tilted its head, the motion impossibly smooth. "Whether to open it."
Her breath caught in her throat. The case pulsed again, its red glow intensifying. The hum in the air became unbearable, a cacophony of sound and pressure that made her head spin.
The phone buzzed one last time.
Do not open it.
The figure took another step forward, its liquid form shifting and rippling. "You don't understand what you're holding," it said, its tone almost gentle. "But you will."
The case pulsed brighter, its heat searing her palms.
"Choose," the figure said.
The hum became a roar.
