A fanciful tale about a tree named Elmer

Elmer Flew

by Kevin Ahern

Elmer Flew

Elmer, the elm told a secret to me

I happen to know is true

He is the most amazing tree

Anybody ever knew

What nobody knows is late last night,

The weather changed, the wind was right,

And Elmer flew

The storm was blowing very hard

And Elmer sitting in our yard

Worried he’d fall down

So packing up his roots all tight

Elmer readied for a flight

Seeing no one was around

His leaves caught up the gusty breeze

And Elmer lifted off with ease

To fly all over town

Into the sky did Elmer fly

And all the world went whizzing by

As the howling wind did blow

He flew close to a bumblebee

Who had never seen a flying tree

But how much do bumblebees know?

Elmer gave the bee a shout

“Will you join me now and fly about?”

And the bee replied, “Sure thing”

So the bumblebee, whose name was Claire

With Elmer flew up in the air

And the two began to sing

“Oh the world is such a lovely sight”

“When viewed from way up here in flight”

“Things look so miniscule”

“From flower gardens to odds and ends”

“Like Mrs. Garner’s picket fence”

“And where the children go to school”

They flew up high and then down low

Sometimes fast and sometimes slow

With lightning in the air

From north to south, then east to west

The view they had, the very best

As they went everywhere

And when the wind stopped swirling round

Elmer from the sky swooped down

Landing where he’d started

He put his roots completely back

Into the ground so deep and black

From the place that he'd departed

And Elmer said to Claire the bee

“Thanks for flying around with me”

“Oh what great fun that was!”

Claire replied and quickly grinned

“If another night we have some wind”

“I’ll be sure to give you a buzz”

Elmer smiled a smile great big

He patted Claire gently with a twig

Then Claire flew out of sight

And so, it looked to folks in town

That Elmer the elm had stood his ground

Against the blowy might

But Elmer’s secret I will keep

And I’ll wonder when I go to sleep

Will Elmer fly tonight?
