Surprise Me Theme for Fiction
Pigeon
by Samantha Wymer
Lucy founds her herself strolling aimlessly on a cobblestone path, her thoughts lost in a whirlpool. She sit down on a faded wooden bench, the afternoon sun peers though the windy tree branches. Her attention fixates on an eldery man who's only a few feet away from the bench that Lucy sits on. The man is wearing a long brown wool coat on a warm afternoon, singing happily, and reaching into his coat pocket to pour something on the ground.
A few seconds later, a swarm of pigeons come flying down from the trees and chirping as they go after what the man poured out for them.
"They love these seeds," the eldery man replies, as he approaches Lucy. His kind eyes met with hers. "Would you like to throw some seeds out?"
"No, thank you!" Lucy stands up. "I would rather watch them."
"I can't wait to join them," the elderly man remarks.
"Join them?" Lucy repeats, her eyebrows lift. "I don't think I understand what you mean by that, sir."
"When my times come," the man answers with a mere smile, "I will turn into a pigeon and fly high and free." He reaches inside of his pocket and pulls out a hand full of seeds and throws them out. "We leave this life, but we always transform into something greater when our time runs out in this life."
Lucy is uncertain of what the eldery man meant, but she thanks him for letting her enjoy watching the pigeon. The eldery man smiles and return his attention to the pigeons he loves dearly.
The next day, Lucy returns to walk on the cobblestone path hoping to encounter the eldery man again. The man was very intriguing and a complete mystery that Lucy became curious to learn more about the man. When she returns to the same spot, the man is nowhere to be seen. Disappointed, Lucy pulls a small bag of seeds to pour on the ground for all the pigeon. Suddenly Lucy hears flapping of wings as the pigeons come down from the trees to enjoy the seeds she brought with her.
Among all the pigeons, one peculiar pigeon catches Lucy's eye, a pigeon with a wool brown coat on. She closes her eyes and opens them again to make sure she isn't seeing things. The pigeon has a wool brown coat on and looks at her with kind eyes.
A few days later, Lucy is reading the newpaper, and she sees a familar face in the death section, the same eldery man she encountered a few days before.
His name was John Davis.
Lucy couldn't explain this remarkable mystery, but the eldery man transformed into a pigeon when this life came to an end.
