My Bed Doll.

by patcelaw

The summer of 1995 was a very long and trying summer for me. My husband was quite ill and having more problems with each day. Early in the summer, he began to develop what looked like blisters on his legs and he also had a big ulcer on the bottom of his foot, which kept him from being able to take a shower for over eight months. To clean himself he had to just do sponge baths at the sink. He so much missed being able to get his showers.

Then in late September around the 21st we had to put him in the hospital because he was so ill.

When my sister heard he was ill and in the hospital, she immediately arranged to get a flight to come to my home in Las Cruces to help me in the days that lie ahead. As a nurse, as I described to her his difficulties, she understood totally that he probably didn't have much time and that she wanted to be with me in the event of his death. My husband did pass away on the 27th day of September and his memorial services were held on the 30th.

After everyone had gone home from the services and I was all alone to take care of things that needed to be done, I was very busy for the first couple of weeks.

About three weeks later I got a phone call from a Christian women's club in Farmington New Mexico asking me if I was available to speak for Christian women's club there and in Cortez Colorado in early November. When I shared with them that I had just lost my husband, they wanted to know if I wanted to delay the speaking engagement. I responded by saying I have had so many things to do. I do not want to stay at home right now. I want to be able to get out a bit where I can be with people and enjoy life. So therefore, I want to keep the engagement schedule on time.

When November came and I was preparing for the speaking engagements, I pretty much had wrapped up the work which had to be done after my husband's death. So, I put together the things that I would need to be able to travel from my home in  m Las Cruces to Farmington, New Mexico, and then on to Cortez, Colorado.

I arranged for a friend to travel with me on this trip.  She and I were very good friends and we always enjoyed our time together when she would accompany me on a speaking engagement. So, on about 10th of November, she and I headed out for the trip to Farmington New Mexico. The trip was to take us about seven hours to get there. We spent the night with a couple in their home before I was to speak the next day.

After I spoke to the club in the afternoon, we left Farmington New Mexico and drove the three hours to Cortez Colorado. When we arrived in Cortez Colorado, we stayed with a very lovely couple who had a beautiful house which overlooked
the Rocky Mountains. Since it was November, there was already some snow on the higher mountains and it was a beautiful view. The name of the couple we stayed with was Wayne and Ginger Lee. They were a lovely couple and we had a very nice day at their home.

The next day was when I spoke for the Cortez Christian women's club. At this club, they were having an auction to raise money for the club events that wer coming up.

In the auction there was the bed doll which you see in the photograph. I started bidding on it. There was one other lady there who was bidding against me and I finally was able to get he to stop bidding when I had reached $27 for the doll. I am not really a doll person, but that doll just seemed to speak to me.

I took her home with me to Las Cruces, New Mexico and she remained on my guestroom bed for the next 23 years before I moved to Glendale, Arizona.

Just two years ago, one of the arms on the doll broke off and it was rather pathetic
that she had lost her arm, but I could not fix it.

So my granddaughter came by before Christmas and she said, "grandma, I would like to give you a Christmas gift of having that doll fixed for you."

She took the doll and had a lady that was going to fix it. However, the lady who was going to try to fix the doll could not find a replacement doll. So my granddaughter wound up finding a replacement herself and put the doll back together and she's beautiful. I now have the doll on my bed. And each day as I make my bed, she sits in the center of the bed just below the pillows. The doll when I bought her, I named Miss Cortez, but now the new doll is named Miss Glendale.
