Too Sleepy to Write

Why is it hard to fall asleep

when problems of the day will creep

into my mind, and make me keep

a tally of some stupid sheep?

Then in the day when I would write,

my lids grow heavy in the light.

My eyes insist on closing tight,

and make coherent thought take flight.

I feel I’ve been bewitched of late.

The lunch feels heavy that I ate.

I'll likely lapse into REM state,

My vows to write each day won't wait.

A writing contest is at stake.

Could coffee keep my brain awake?

I can’t find anything to take,

but here’s my rhyme.

Give me a break!
