Jealousy Is for the Birds

by Verna Cole Mitchell

“Have you noticed,” chirped a sparrow from her nest,

“How outlandishly the goldfinch female’s dressed?”

Sighed her mate from perch up higher in the tree,

“What she’s wearing makes no difference to me.”

Said she, “The male must think that he’s a prize.

To see his brilliant color hurts my eyes.”

She tweeted on how gaudy they appear,

Not noticing a pair of goldfinch near.

Although her mate grew tired of her tirade,

Still wisely he no displeasure displayed.

He said, "Our color may not cause sensation,

Yet we're a vital part of God’s creation.

God said that not a one of us would fall,

But He would be nearby to see it all.

Your gray and brown are beautiful to me,

And goldfinch cannot sing as prettily.”

At that, she fluttered down to gather seed

For hungry babies in the nest to feed.

A goldfinch, never pausing in his flight,

Then dropped upon her head a wisp of white.
