This Is a poem depicting my husband's funeral

The Funeral

by Kristen Thomason

It was a cold, ugly day when we laid you to rest
So when I had to get dressed
I looked like a mess
Wearing a satin dress while in distress

As I shivered in the cold
I watched it unfold
They had your coffin laid out
Like a centerpiece no doubt

The mud was wet and sticky
So mom and dad got stuck pretty quickly
They missed the funeral, we all were worried
And it felt like it was hurried

I wasn't ready to leave you in the cold
But I had to go, I was told
Though I sat there as long as I could
Then I got up, there I stood

As if I expected the casket to open
And the curse to be broken
But it remained shut and quiet
So I left and became compliant

I wanted to see where you would be buried
So I did not tarry
But then I saw the hole and ran away
I left you there that day

It was a cold, dreary day
When I left you there to stay
