A contest entry

The Dress

Taunted by the memory,
a reverie replays.

We wandered through
a weekend,
spent in dress shops.

She, my honored maid,
a vision in chiffon,
her gown
of candy apple red
to wear beside my white.

And I, the blinded
blushing bride,
basked
inside the brevity
of a Saturday's sobriety.

Yet watching shadows
waited
just over the Sunday Horizon.

And Wednesday's fading will
was gone
come Thursday morning.

Goodbye was in
her sunless eyes
as she tumbled,

a swift
and final fall
into addiction's
open arms.

Vows hush
behind the echo
of a eulogy,
a trail of tears
follow
her casket
down the aisle

where she rests
in the dress
she'll never wear.
