Once upon a time...

We Two Use To Be

by Tom Horonzy

I befriended a friend
whose life came to an end
fourteen years after he arrived.
It made me cry like I never could,
previously praying I never would again,
but alas, happy drips do drop
from my eyelids, each time he visits me,
through memories made when we palled about.

I miss his pleading eyes, his joyful stride,
and, I swear, a smile (Bearded Collies are known for)
as we rode highway miles, his mane,
Blowin' in the Wind, as sung by Kansas.

Two years have passed since
he died in my arms.
on the veterinarian's floor.
I cried for him then, as I cry for me now,
telling this tale of a furry white and gray ball
of frenetic energy wagging its tail.

Sad at his passing, yet Happy he was freed
from the seizures that demonized he,
for it won't be long 'til we
are playing fetch and chasing cows
above the clouds together as forever pals.

Sad Poems writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Sadness has overcome us all at one time or another. Either caused by a relative or close friend's death or from the girl or guy that broke our heart or just life in general. We all handle situations differently, some good, some bad. This contest gives us the ability to explore this. Your poem can also play into other emotions that are common to writing like this such as anger or depression.

Poetry comes in many forms. Love it or leave it, the memory encapsulated herein is one of eight million perhaps written in The Naked City. This comment was simply an aside.

The photographs are my own and the story was a tear-jerker for me to tell.
