Our Red Carpet Experience

by Debi Pick Marquette

Most of you already knew that my husband, Glen and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in May.  I still enjoy looking at the special book that so many friends wrote poems or stories for.

We made plans to get together with two other couples who we are best of friends with, as we are all celebrating 50 years of marriage within six months of each other.

After Glen and I talked about it a little more, I told him, "Y'know, for all the things I was going to do in my lifetime and never did, let's do something crazy and fun for that day.  He looked at me with a worried look, "I am not going to jump out of an airplane." I laughed, "No, silly, but how about we rent a limo?" He gave me a strange look I hadn't seen in a while as he remarked, "That is a brilliant idea!" I think the last time I saw that look or was called brilliant was the day I started putting shredded cheese in my meatloaf about ten years ago.

I then ran my limo thoughts by the others, and they all loved the idea.

When that day came, it was pretty cool seeing that stretch limo pull up to the house, driven by an awesome guy named Corey. Yet I called him James for most of the day. His limo etiquette was exactly what I’d hoped it would be. When we were on our way to the restaurant we all enjoyed a glass of champagne or wine.

We soon realized how awesome our driver was when we arrived at our restaurant. It took a few minutes for him to open the door.  But when he did we knew what the small delay had been about.

He had laid out a red carpet for us. How cool was that? If that wasn't enough, as we entered the building on the red carpet, there was a crowd cheering for us. Corey had called Willy's on the Lake and told them that we were on our dway,  and what we were celebrating. It truly was our day to shine.

Naturally, we all soaked that up and walked in there with big smiles on our faces.  We sat out on the patio where a warm summer breeze was blowing off the lake.  We had a wonderful meal, and when it was time to go, then James, I mean Corey, asked where to next?

We drove around for a while and then stopped for one last drink. There, we had another crowd outside cheering for us as Corey let us out of the limo and of course on the red carpet. When we got inside there was a woman who right away asked our names. After we told her, she announced with a microphone to the entire place who we were and said that we were all celebrating 50th anniversaries for a total of 150 years. Everyone cheered, and we had many congrats; some even gave us standing ovations.

Okay, so maybe it was not Oscar Night for us, but I do have to say that it's as close as we will ever get. For three non-celebrity couples, we truly enjoyed our anniversary limo experience.

I'd like to think that the reason we were there that day, and the roles we played to do this outing so we could walk that red carpet were more meaningful and significant than those if we had been real stars on the red carpet the night of the Academy Awards.

After all, we did have an advantage. We each had fifty years to rehearse.
