The Pianist In The Tyrolian Hat

by jim vecchio

Leonard had a unique style
Pounding the keys with his finger
He derived his nickname, Chico*
For being quite a swinger

No one could play like he could
Though brother Harpo sometimes took his place*
But his repertoire didn’t match Chico’s
Despite the likeness of their face

The Brothers, they had no peer
But notoriety brought with it, curse
Vices his brothers could handle
Did empty Leonard’s purse

This concert pianist, this great comic
Was also a losing gambler
His brothers took charge of his money
-No happiness in being a rambler

Married twice, a loving father
He should have reveled in his life
But he was undone by personal demons
Cutting through him like a knife

Recognized

*pronounced "Chick-o"
*when young, Chico got a job playing piano. Sometimes, he was obligated to two job at the same time. In that event, Harpo looked so much like Chico, he would take his place at one of the gigs.
