Background
postapocalyptic medieval setting. In the fictional land of Arrs an unknown black mist has taken over the bodies of humans. They become known as the tainted.

The next day we all left for the capital. The journey was long and we spent most of our nights camping. Every once and a while we’d come across a place that had property owned by the information guild or Duchy. When that had happened, we’d have a more restful night indoors. We were travelling on horses and by buggy, so we’d stay at those places for an additional day to give the horses a break. It’s convenient to have nobles in the party. Demi had lots of money and property, and the marquisate had quite a few horses. Eventually, after a few weeks of travel, we arrived in the capital. Tyler and Jer’s parents owned a mansion relatively close to the palace. It was the perfect place to setup base and get our final preparations in order.

Brandy helped us disguise ourselves as merchants. We didn’t want to draw more attention than necessary, so we opted to disguise ourselves as horse traders. I found it humorous since the horses belong to the marquisate. Demi had used the information guild to send a message in Jer’s name. Fortunately they got the message, and the guard at the gate let us in without a fuss. There must be quite a lot of loyalty if the family still has guards. The butler came out to greet us, and Jer removed the cloth covering his face. The butler looked surprised, but Jer put his finger to his mouth, signaling him to not make a fuss. Half of our troop helped bring the horses to the stable and carrel, while the other half followed Jer inside. The butler said something to a servant and a few minutes later we heard footsteps running through the hall. The Marquis couple hurried towards us, their eyes zoned in on Jer.

“Jeremy!” His mother exclaimed, rushing in for a hug. “I’m so glad you’re okay. Why are you dressed like that? And what were you thinking, traveling this distance in the midst of all this chaos? You’re all grown up but still worrying this mother!” The marquess nagged her son, tears in her eyes.

Jeremy patted his mother’s back. “It’s okay mom. You and dad raised me, of course I’m okay. I might like books, but we’re a warrior family. As for the clothes, well there’s a reason for that.”

“Welcome home, son.” Jer’s father, though quiet, was visibly relieved. “Your message was a bit confusing. Why do we need so many horses at the main house?”

“Ah, it’s a long story. There’s quite a few of us, but can my party stay here for a few days? Also, there’s someone else with me that you’ll be happy to see.”

The marquess studied his son. “Stay as long as you need. The butler will show you guys to the guest rooms. The annex is also available if you need more space.”

“Thank you.” Jer smiled brightly at his parents. I watched him, somewhat envious, but also curious; it was interesting to see him as someone’s son and not a young master or a hunter. I was about to follow the butler when Jer called out to me. “Taya, Demi, I think you should help me explain.” Demi nodded and we both followed Jer into the living room. A few moments later, Tyler and the others entered the mansion. I heard an exclamation of surprise, most likely from the butler, and Tyler walked into the room shortly after.

“Tyler?” The marquis couple immediately stood up.

“Hi mom, dad.” Tyler greeted awkwardly. He walked towards the frozen couple. It took but a moment for a group hug to form. As a spectator, the family reunion was both heartwarming and a little awkward. Demi, sensing my discomfort, held my hand.

“Sorry,” Jer whispered. “I should have let you washup first. I was a bit short sighted.”

“It’s fine.” Demi answered for both of us. They must have heard our whispered conversation because they broke off the group hug and awkwardly apologized. “No need. Of course you’d be happy to see your family.” For the first time since arriving, the marquis focused on someone other than his children. Recognition flitted across his face and his expression turned to one of shock.

“You highness, Demetri?”
