Background postapocalyptic medieval setting. In the fictional land of Arrs an unknown black mist has taken over the bodies of humans. They become known as the tainted. |
"Do we have a plan for the tainted?" Demi asked, water still dripping from his hair. I decided to look elsewhere, lest my thoughts get away from me.
"What do you mean? If we seal the souls, the tainted will automatically be dealt with." Everyone looked at Demi in puzzlement.
"Yes, but we don't know how long that will take. Once we release Creed's magic, won't all the tainted be drawn to the capital? We don't know how much collateral damage will take place while we're in the palace. I'm asking if you have a plan to counter that?" Tyler stared blankly at Demi.
"We never thought of it." One woman replied.
"The hunters from the guild offered to help me if I needed it. I think we should take some with us to the capital. I trained them so I'm confident in their skills. They also wouldn't be pulled into any politics because they're just doing their job."
"It's not a bad idea," Tyler mused. "But would the guild leader really be okay with you taking their personnel? Plus I doubt they realize how far they'll be travelling."
"It doesn't hurt to ask," I piped up. "We can present them with all the relevant information and let them decide. After speaking to the guild leader, of course." After what I saw today, I was pretty confident that the majority would be willing to follow, despite the distance.
The group agreed and the next morning Demi and I, once again, entered the hunters guild. The guild master immediately welcomed us into his office. We explained to him that we were heading to the capital, and that we had reason to believe there would be an unusually large gathering of tainted there. Because of Demi's position, the guild master immediately agreed to lend a handful of hunters for the cause. Next we went to the training center. The hunters were surprised, yet happy to see us.
"You're back! Did you cancel your plans?" One of the hunters asked with hopeful eyes.
"No, instead we came to see if a few of you can help with our plans. We have reason to believe that there will be a gathering of tainted in the capital. My group is dealing with the source of the problem, but we need hunters to deal with the tainted in the city."
Just as I suspected, there was a clamoring of people offering their services. Demi was flustered by the reaction but it was within my expectations. I stepped up in Demi's place.
"The guild leader has approved five of you to come with us to the capital. The journey will take about a month. You know each other skills best so, excluding those supporting a family, choose among yourselves the best hunters who are able to mobilize immediately. We will be leaving after lunch today. It doesn't matter how you choose. The five who are selected should report to the hunters tavern, with their gear, ready to leave. If you own a horse, bring it."
I didn't want to break up families so I set a condition. There was enough tragedy going around, no need to add to it. I set it didn't matter how they chose, apart from that, but I could already feel the rise of competitive spirit within the group. I bet they'll fight it out.
