Background postapocalyptic medieval setting. In the fictional land of Arrs an unknown black mist has taken over the bodies of humans. They become known as the tainted. |
The group enjoyed a hardy breakfast, thanks to Demi and Chris. Despite the seriousness of the situation, everyone was in a good mood. We packed our things and finished our descent, finally arriving at our little house in Tal. It was too small to fit everyone, so Tyler’s group checked in at the inn while Demi and I visited the guild. Jer, Derek, Brandy and Dave, went to the market to gather additional supplies, and then check on the horse and buggy they left at the boarding house.
The guild leader welcomed us in excitement. I felt bad, knowing we were going to crush his hopes. “Welcome back! How was your trip?” The guild leader inquired with vigor. I was slightly embarrassed but Demi was unmoved. “Productive,” Demi replied. “Unfortunately, we’re just passing through. We’d like to stay in the house one more night, if that’s all right.” The guild leader’s excitement instantly deflated.
“Of course that’s fine. We’ll gladly help with anything you need. In fact, you can keep the house and use it whenever you are town. The owners died at the beginning of the pandemic and there were no other family members to claim the house.”
“Well, I don’t know when we’ll have the chance to return but that’s certainly convenient. Actually, I’ll just buy the house. You can send the bill to the Duchy.”
The guild master visibly brightened at the comment. “Yes, yes. It’s an honor to have you stay with us whenever you’re passing through. Would you like to say goodbye to the hunters? They all appreciate your classes and I think it would mean a lot if you talked to them before you leave.”
“Hmm, if it will increase morale, I will do so.”
Demi and I headed towards the training center, where we previously spent the most time. The hunters were diligently practicing the techniques Demi taught. As soon as we entered, everyone stopped what they were doing and sped towards us. Their vigor was a bit overwhelming.
“You guys are back! Are we resuming lessons, captain?”
“Unfortunately, no. I have some business to take care of in the capital. We came to check in and say goodbye.”
Murmurs of disappointment spread through the crowd. One of the hunters approached us and bowed his head with this fist to his chest. “Thank you for all your teaching, your highness.” Demi and I were both taken aback. I thought only the guild leader knew Demi’s identity. The man continued speaking, “It seemed like you were trying to be low key but your appearance stands out. It’s been an honor to be trained by you and...thank you for your service.” Demi’s eyes shook at the man’s comment. Another hunter stepped up, taking a similar posture.
“We have heard the rumors that follow you, even in a remote place like this. Thank you for winning the war. Many people lost loved ones, your actions gave their sacrifice meaning.”
One by one, the hunters bowed in respect. My chest filled with pride. It had nothing to do with me, but I was proud that Demi was receiving the recognition he deserved.
“If you ever need anything, even now, we will gladly serve you.”
Demi coughed, reigning in his emotions. “Thank you. I did what I had to do as a prince, but your sentiments make me feel everything was worth it.” Demi bowed his head in turn.
“I will give you one last lesson. Since you know who I am, I will use my aura. Taya will demonstrate how to defeat an opponent with powers. This will be useful should you face a mutant.”
The hunters moved aside as Demi and I took our positions in the center of the arena. Blue flames clung to his sword. I pulled out two daggers; one held backwards with the spine towards my forearm, and one held in a backhanded grip with the tip facing forward. I took a deep breath to calm myself. It’s been a while since I fought without aura. I sprung towards Demi, lifting my armed forearm to defend against his sword, I shifted my weight into his sword while my other dagger slashed towards his stomach. Demi, being a skilled fighter, leaned away from my attack, eventually jumping back. This time Demi shot flames towards me, similar to how the tainted used their mist. I rolled out of the way, narrowly avoiding the flames. I gracefully returned to my feet before barrowing towards him and tackling him to the ground. The match ended with one dagger parrying his sword and my other dagger hovering over his neck. I grinned triumphantly. Demi was slightly surprised but then returned my grin with a proud smile of his own. Applause broke out around us as we got back on our feet.
“You’ve improved a lot, Taya. Your fighting is unrecognizable compared to before.” One of the hunters I had previously sparred with, complimented me. I blushed in embarrassment but at the same time I was proud. Not too long ago I could only run away, now I can fight for myself. It all felt surreal. Demi patted my shoulder in acknowledgment.
“This concludes the lesson.” Demi announced. “I hope it helps you in the future.”
The hunters thanked us, many reiterating that they would like to help in any way they can. We returned to the cabin where everyone else had already gathered.
“What happened to you two? Did you roll around on the ground?” Brandy queried in astonishment.
“We gave one last demonstration before leaving.”
“What kind of-no, never mind. You guys should shower.”
Demi and I headed towards the bathroom to wash up. “You can shower first.” I said, turning to Demi. I was a bit startled by the intense look in his eyes. I gulped. Demi carefully removed grass from my hair, his had slightly lingering on my neck. “I’d like to suggest showering together, but it’s a full house.” My eyes shook. “I’ll settle for a kiss, if you’ll let me.” I nodded and he drew my head towards him. The kiss started cautious and increased in intensity. My heart fluttered along with my breath. I ended up showering in daze.
