Sorry is Just a Word

by Betty Bleen

The most hurtful part was

how you just said,

Sorry about that,

with no sincerity,

as if you had accidentally

bumped me with the door,

stepped on my toe.

I wanted to hear the hurt

in your voice,

see tears well in your eyes,

evidence that all these years

we’ve shared together

actually meant something.

The most hurtful part was

how you just said,

Sorry about that,

as if you had forgotten

to take out the trash,

had accidentally

stepped on the cat’s tail.

As if the word, sorry,

was hardly worth the effort

to mention,

was an afterthought,

was just another word.
